Umpire accountability?

Postby OxCamBlues » Sun Jul 07, 2013 7:52 pm

Two games in two days where a questionable holding the ball decision has influenced the outcome. What will the consequences be for the umpires and decisions in question? Will the umpires boss continue to shrug it off as part and parcel of the game?

Discuss.....

Umpires have an 'Umpires Observer' @ every match.
They 'Grade' the performances of all the Umpires on the ground & feedback during the week @ training.
If an Umpire is not given an 'A' Grading, they are automatically 'dropped' to a lower level the following week.

Personally, I think umpires should umpire in the same 'teams' EVERY week.
That way they will know each others interpretations, movements, etc. - this would be more conducive to consistency that is desired.

One of the problems with our game is the "interpretation" open to individuals.
If they were in the same 'team' every week, at least these interpretations could be consistently applied in each game they officiate together.

It's not one umpiring decision. It is the umpiring in general giving too many free kicks. AFL had this problem at the start of the year and then they put the whistle away about a month ago and it has been much better. Just tell them unless absolutely sure it is a free kick, let it go. Any attempt by players at diving or ducking shouldn't be a free even if infringed.

Umpires were:

Corey Bowen
James Ralston
Leigh Haussen

None should ever umpire such a critical game again after today

Yeah because the increase in fitness hasn't made the players faster.....

Actually you can possibly blame Jack Oatey for the two adn three umprie system. With the handball quick movement game he intitalted in the 50-60s is arguably the catalyst for the running game we see today (the Victorians claim Len Smith but we South Australians know better).

So the speeding up of the game compared to the "kick to contest" type game of earlier times necessitated the need for a 2nd umpire then a third.

So blame Jack for the number of umpres we have now!!!
