In Whicker's bio on the SANFL site it makes mention of this :

Not only was he playing a significant role in Football Park’s development, the former Double Blues wingman – who played 43 league games between 1963 and 1966 – was establishing the catering operation, now known as the successful Encore Group.

From memory there was an AFL commissioner that owned or was an integral part of a catering company that had contracts with the AFL, passed away a couple of years ago, ex Essendon player I think....Jacobs or similar.

You think if the SANFL were to cut all ties with the two SA based AFL clubs and the AFL in general for complete autonomy it would survive long term? You have got to be kidding.

Well, I suppose it might. But I think the $65 entry fee to games and $1000 memberships might drive people away.

Unfortunately Booney, you've misinterpreted what I wrote. I never wrote cut all ties with the SA based AFL clubs. The inference was, if whatever the AFL contributes to the league can be substituted then there will no longer be a quasi reliance on the AFL and greater autonomy for the sanfl could result.

Booney do you know how much financially the AFL directly contributes to the SANFL clubs each year?
Not income derived from the SANFLs investment in the SA based AFL clubs, but from the AFL.

Does anyone know how much each year the afl directly contributes to the SANFL clubs each year? Not the income "potentially", generated from the SANFLs two licenses.

On a slight tangent, Ian Collins never had a conflict of interest either ... allegedly

4 Corners did a story on him and the AFL a few years ago.

What, a mumble behind a middle finger as the cheque was being signed  Seriously if they did, the gratitude was extremely short lived.

As for muck raking at its finest, Footy Park is about to become recycled road base because one club did a fair amount of that, while showing gratitude for being bailed out by the stadium owners of course.

Ron Evans was involved with Spotless, who won the catering rights at Etihad.

Not income derived from the SANFLs investment in the SA based AFL clubs, but from the AFL.

Still no joy finding the answer yet Booney?

Thinking how this reserves fiasco might work. What if;
1) the eight remaining sanfl clubs received say $600,000 each, each year. Costing the two AFL clubs (underwritten by the afl) just under $2.5mil each.
2) the sanfl salary cap is applied on a pro-rata basis to the afl reserves top up players. For example if the salary cap is $300,000 for 30 players $10,000 a player, then if they required 20 top ups their cap would be $200,000.
3) the afl games are not for points, so the sanfl can "treat" them as a trial game.
4) port lose their zones these are redistributed.
5) increase the sanfl salary cap, to be more competitive in retaining players from country or vfl football.

And if they don't like it; NO AFL IN THE SANFL. They want "us" more than than "we" want them.

Sorry mate, had forgotten all about this.

I did find an annual report from the SANFL that had a $1m AFL grant, along with a $330K "Grandstand supplement".

Not being a financial expert it appears other than the $1m there was no other grant from the AFL, directly.

Thanks Booney. On that basis, I don't think I'm " kidding myself", in thinking that income can be replaced, resulting in greater autonomy from the AFL.

The AFL also pay (+/-) $6.12m to each AFL club, inculding Adelaide and Port. Not direst SANFL revenue I acknowledge, but money the owner of the two licences (the SANFL) did not have to find.

My point is more about making enemies in high places. It isn't a smart thing to do...

Lee Iacocca, Nelson Mandela....

The money the AFL pays back to the clubs is their dividend though, and pays for the massive salaries of the players and football department , as well as the administration. Not sure how that equates to funding the SANFL, more like it stops the SANFL funding the Crows and Power. Well that's how its supposed to work.

To cut free from the AFL clubs in SA may have its disadvantages, but there will be opportunities.

Do any of these threads include details about the sale of the AFL licenses?

I caught half a conversation that the SANFL would get $x every year for 15 years, or something similar? Do we know if that is in addition to continuing annual dividends in that period, or alternately, is suitably loaded to account for it not being a lump sum? Otherwise, it could end up the same as the dividend, but stopping in 15 years time.

On the surface it sounds like Mr.Olsen's giveaway of the TAB.
