Also, this bit .. I would like to underline that the West Adelaide Football Club in consultation with the SANFL and the other clubs will make the decision that is in the best interests of our club, our members, our league and the South Australian football community.

Fails to mention in consultation with the members

Not having a crack at just West btw, just using their publication as an example - I expect the same spin from most if not all clubs.

And they've done exactly that. They consulted with each other to put out matching media releases.

Just let the adults talk for a minute mate

They are also considering keeping retired players around to play in their reserves team.
That could spell the end of the likes of say a Callinan going back to Central District. Again, not going to please the masses.

I don't have a real problem with that, after all they are their players and as they come off a list make sense to give them one or two years extra by recruiting them, playing reasonable footy and earning a bit of coin, hopefully in the SANFL reserves!!

I cant see too many 31-32 year olds who have been at AFL level for 6-8 years wanting to play on after they "retire".

Could any of us see Michael Doughty playing SANFL footy this year? I cant. Thats why he's off in the Southern (?) or country league.

Not them, the 23-26 year olds who get cut and then told play on with us, stay in the system get your body right and you never know.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I just spoke to board member that I work with from one of the clubs (not Centrals) and it doesn't look good. From his understanding if there was a vote on Wednesday night it would have got through 7-1 with his club the only one that is dead against it. He seems to think that John Olsen has been going around to the clubs and getting in their ears.

I asked him what the supporters of all clubs can do and he said the NO AFL IN THE SANFL campaign is great and keep doing it. He said ring up all the sports shows you can and demand a meeting with the President of your club.

I for one am extremely disappointed that my club is one of them that would have voted yes.

He also said North were directed by their board to vote no but their President seemed to change his mind at the meeting.

Oust finished speaking with an official from a club and he suggested that if there was an impromptu vote the other night the decision to accept the Power and Crows would have been unanimously in favour - and that's before so many critical details have even been tabled.

It IS going to happen, and to be honest I think most of us have always known it would be the case.

They arent going to release that information to the media when they havent had the chance to put their case forward to the SANFL yet. Its clear that this week was just a preliminary discussion on 'do we want this or not?'. As the answer has come back as "maybe", now both clubs will have the chance to put their proposal forward. Why were you expecting every nook and cranny to be put on the table this week?

PORT: It appears that to maintain a "level playing field" for both bid entries then the Magpies and their SANFL structure is dead.

Which makes me even less keen to have a reserves side in the SANFL.

My thoughts: No club has it appears talked of any payment one off or ongoing to join the SANFL. My mail is that neither want to pay a cent although the Crows have put up the financial model I mentioned earlier in the post but I can't see a Crows Reserves side dragging in an extra 3000 people a week? Those present Crows fans who are supporters of the SANFL presently attend and follow their SANFL clubs, the rest of the Crows fans couldn't care less so why would that majority get excited about having to travel all over suburbia to watch a team of fringe players with some non-aligned top up players at extra cost to them as supporters? We will end up like a VFL scenario with bugger all crowds watching.

The key is to get the thousands of people who dont go to the SANFL anymore, or only go to a couple games a year to go more regularly. Surely there is a market out there for ex-SANFL going Adelaide supporters who will want to go along and watch Adelaide play against their SANFL side? Surely there will be plenty of people out there who normally go "Nah, I wont bother going to North today" who will go "Well North are playing Adelaide, I might go along and check out my SANFL club and my AFL clubs youngsters". I dont think quoting what happened in the VFA is relevant to our seperate situation in the SANFL, a much stronger, much more relevant, much more well supported league.

In the league. His club put a proposal forward about making the SANFL League competition 8 teams next year by getting rid of the Magpies and having the Crows and Port in the reserves and it wasn't looked upon favourably by the other clubs.

He said he will have more information for me on Monday as that is when they are having a board meeting.

My question to the forum - will there be any possible proposal put forward by the AFL clubs that will make people here change their minds and accept that it might not be the end of the integrity of South Australian football if Adelaide and Port have reserves sides in the SANFL? What would need to be in the proposals for people to accept the change? Or is it a blanket no, never, do not want?

Im finding it hard to fathom that so many people would simply jump off their clubs never to return if this goes through.

Good question Macca. I have tried to come up with some scenarios that wouldn't compromise the league competition and at the moment I can't think of one.

If the AFL sides play for no premiership points then the games against them would be treated like Foxtel Cup matches. There is no way a club is going to risk injuries and go hard against a team if there are no premiership points to be won.

If the AFL sides do play for premiership points then what gets done about the salary cap? You can't have 2 teams with a different salary cap.

The there's the question that no one seems to be able to answer. Where do both teams get their top up players from?

When players we may spend shitload of money (transfer fees), development time etc etc can't be used against us without any chance for us to keep them.

I can handle players being drafted to afl clubs but to then use them against us to win premiership points is insulting

If either of the AFL clubs had cared to mention "we want to win a SANFL premiership" amongst any of their propaganda then they may have held my attention for a short stint.

I will NEVER attend a SANFL league match where Crows or Port reserves are playing.

Keith Thomas has stated this, in writing to his members, that the goal would still be to win the SANFL premiership.

Clarke from Adelaide on the weekend on 5AA stated that their goal would be to win the SANFL premiership.

There seems to be the thoguht that development and winning must be mutually exclusive. I dont see why this should be. Surely the best form of development is a winning culture?

funny thing is, it isnt up to the sanfl to solve that riddle for the afl clubs. the afl clubs need to put their proposals forward, and then the sanfl can either accept, or reject them. they want entry into the league, they need to sell the idea to us.

at this point, i cant see any way that it would work. i dont see any benefits to the sanfl, aside from a suitcase full of used notes, and i dont think that money is worth throwing away everything the league stands for.

i seriously doubt that i will bother with my membership if this goes ahead, nor the memberships of my wife and two kids, and ill be telling the club why im not renewing. however, if there is some part of the proposal that i havent thought of that shows benefit to my club and the league, i may change my mind. from where i sit at the moment, that is highly unlikely.

Intetesting speaking to an ex club official about the possibility of a TV network jumping on board and he believes channel 9 would be keen to get interested if the AFL clubs are admitted to the the comp.
BUT, they would only show the games the AFL sides were involved in.

If it gets rid of the bye I'd be willing to have Manchester United reserves in the SANFL!
If they throw in getting rid of Sunday matches you can throw in an Adelaide 36ers reserves side for all I care!

Excellent question Macca. I honestly believe that for some people, they won't know until a new arrangement has commenced.

I don't like the thought of it, but if Alex Georgiou, KMac, Bode, Phillips etc etc are still running around in a Red and Blue guernsey I don't know that I could stop actively supporting them.
