Same, hardly ever watch FTA anymore.
Fox kills them in terms of quality and ad free is also a huge bonus

It's a statewide comp, not national. Fox ain't interested.

I don't have FOX but I loath the channel 7 delayed telecasts of Crows matches from Football Park so much that I pay the AFL $14 to access the FOX stream online, which i run through my big screen TV (a decision I regretted at about the 20 minutes mark of the first term against Sydney). You are not supposed to be able to do this in Australia, but that is pretty easy to get around.

I also do the same when Australia play cricket overseas, but I get those streams for free.

Harry, it isn't internet TV, it is the internet. The way of the future. My 14 year old literally does not know how to turn my main TV and associated sound system on. She watches everything on the internet. I know it is hard to understand, almost every household has a massive TV or TV's, but the teenagers in said households watch everything hunched over a tiny laptop screen!

Understand that. Just bad phrasing. But I don't reckon the SANFL clubs are brave enough to take that leap. Hope I'm wrong.

Not sure what you mean by "against the internet". If you mean refusing to consider or acknowledge the potential of the internet then maybe the ostrich analogy is applicable.

So far based on what we know.

900K extra a year to have the priviledge of being on commerical tv, may potentailly lose the country SA viewer (which arguably would be the largest audience).

Then there is the possibility of being able to do some sort of live stream and maybe reach a larger audience while potentially making some money from it.

So for me at this stage its a thanks but no thanks deal. Not totally against the idea and would be open to more negotiations but personally 900K a year could be spent a lot better in the SANFL.

900K would a go long way to trying to retain reserves/fringe players which i think is a huge issue for the SANFL.

I would have thought that with ads after every goal, during the breaks between quarters etc., that a million dollars is recoupable through advertising over 20 games a year. I'm not sure what the ratings are for SANFL matches except that the Grand Final usually gets over 100,000. Seems a bit greedy of Channel 9 to demand so much money when the ABC demand a fraction of that and don't have ads. Having said that, though it seems fanciful that there would be a bidding war over SANFL TV rights in 2013, if other stations compete for it, they may drive down the price a bit. I think something like $200K would be worth getting the SANFL on TV each week, especially if it's on a more commercial network than the ABC.

Channel 9 are owned by a private equity firm CVC Capital Partners. They bought it with the sole intention of making it more profitable so that they can sell it for more than they paid for it. That is why private equity firms exist. So yeah, they will be greedy, and they will expect the games for nothing and will sell the advertising for their own exclusive profit. They are well known for their utter ruthlessness. Just ask any one of the thousands of employees who have been made redundant once their company has been bought by a private equity firm.

By the way, has any other sporting organisation been stupid enough to fall for an arrangement like this with a TV network?

But back to the ABC for a moment. It may be serendipitous for the forces of evil that this issue arises at the same time as the push for AFL reserves teams. But there's one thing that's serendipitous for the forces of good: the timing of the federal election, to be held in the middle of finals month.

The member for Adelaide is on the record as raising this issue in the Federal Parliament, in strong support of ongoing ABC coverage of the SANFL. That's the same member for Adelaide who's facing a tough fight to retain her seat.

Time for some strings to get pulled, and for a good news story to get announced during the election campaign, I would hope.

Plenty. Off the top of my head Netball & Poker used to pay One/Ten to get them to show their sports on their channel.

Yeah I think the early bird deal was around $50 and then went up on the eve of the season starting. I think also before the finals started they did a deal $1 for all the finals game.

FWIW, Last I heard during the season nbl.tv had around 3,000-4,000 subscribers.

Netball used that good coverage to get a good paying deal out of Fox Sports and I think have now moved on to SBS and I don't think that ultimate poker stuff or whatever it was is on TV anymore, well FTA anyway. I know they used to show a fair bit of poker/darts on Fox Sports when I had it.

Channel 9 nor any other commercial tv station in the running for the SANFL rights is not demanding money.
The $1m quoted would go to the production company packaging the coverage which obviously is looking to make a profit for its efforts.

Kate may be our best bet to save the SANFL. I think you'll find the SANFL hasn't given up hope yet of convincing the ABC to retain the coverage.
