SANFL head of football Chris Davies told The Advertiser on Tuesday that keeping the league on television "is a cornerstone of our plans for next year".

"It is important for our competition to be seen on television," he said.

"Going back to commercial television is one of our options, but the dollars are something we have to be aware of.

"Streaming on the internet is another option. We still want to work with the ABC but are not sure where they are placed."

McGuire Media has successfully packaged other sports for commercial television.

The formula has a television station gain the vision of SANFL games without the production costs while the sports body improves exposure for its clubs and their sponsors.

Channel 9 would get SANFL games for free and split the commercial revenue with McGuire Media - a stark contrast to the 1980s when Nine paid the SANFL $100,000 for a three-year hold on the league's television rights. Nine paid the costs to produce two games each weekend and the annual Magarey Medal count.

The SANFL, in partnership with McGuire Media, would seek sponsors to minimise the $1 million annual production costs.

"We could not afford $1 million a year," Davies said.

"We're looking at how those costs can be minimised with sponsors and hope to know if this is possible in the next few weeks."

Sounds very interesting. It's clear the ABC are trying to go away from it.

The NBL have created their own online channel NBL.TV which televises every game for around $50 a year for subscribers. The costs are off-set by advertisements and on-selling the games to betting agencies around the world. Not sure if that aspect could really work for the SANFL but I would assume pretty much every game is already taped for scouting purposes. It also reduces the production costs significantly for any network that might want to get involved broadcasting wise when the package is already dished up to them.

Obviously Ch 9/ABC would be better for exposure but good to see it is something they're considering.

This reminds me of a story that featured in the Adelaide media for about 24 hours in the early 80's. Story was to the effect that SANFL was considered more "America friendly" than VFL, apparently because our style of play was more suited to American tastes. There was a major American TV network that was considering picking up SANFL and broadcasting it in the States, coast-to-coast. Of course nothing came of it. Nothing will come of this either. When you have to pay a broadcaster, there is only one reason, it obviously isn't commercially viable. The ABC will not broadcast SANFL in 2014, the decision has already been made. Internet streaming is the only option. Bring it on I say, screw paying the ABC. Don't we already pay taxes?

Heard a commentator say if Cows or Pork reserves were in SANFL more people would watch it and make sponsorship easier? A trojan horse to get that crap in our league?

I can't see this happening due to the cost. The AFL teams might push for it and offer to "fund it" to a large degree if AFL Reserves come into the League Comp however I can see us being subjected to alternate weeks of watching their games at the exclusion of games between stand alone SANFL clubs especially if the AFL clubs tip in money!

More compromise and less independence and integrity!
Piss weak SANFL and the CLOWNS who run it.

Can't see it happening. Nine and its various owners over the years have reduced local programming from its schedules to a bare minimum. Why would that change in the times we are currently living through?
If it does, will we see our SANFL on at 10pm at night, or worse?

More people can watch online than can watch channel 9. Interstate and overseas viewers for a start.

SANFL on Channel 9 in 2014?

Postby Dutchy » Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:28 am

SANFL could return to commercial television next season, for the first time since 1991, as the ABC prepares to walk away from football in both Adelaide and Perth.

But the league would need to pay $1 million a season for production costs.

The SANFL is in talks with Eddie McGuire's media production company to keep the local league on television.

The SANFL's preferred network is Channel 9, which last telecast the state league in partnership with the ABC in 1991. It is the only local television station that can give the SANFL exclusive hold on the Saturday afternoon timeslot.

But the production costs - estimated at $30,000-$40,000 a game and $1 million a season - would have to be picked up by the SANFL, not Channel 9.

These figures are beyond the SANFL's budgets, which currently allocate $70,000 to the ABC's production bills.

The SANFL would need major commercial sponsors to reduce its financial exposure.

SANFL and McGuire Media executives have been in talks for two months and included Channel 9's new owners and sales staff yesterday.

Channel 9's Adelaide general manager Graeme Gilbertson declined to comment on the proposal and negotiations with the SANFL and McGuire Media.

The SANFL, in partnership with McGuire Media, would seek sponsors to minimise the $1 million annual production costs.

"We could not afford $1 million a year," Davies said.

"We're looking at how those costs can be minimised with sponsors and hope to know if this is possible in the next few weeks."

Big sponsor dollars needed. I would think being able to schedule either a sat or sun game each week to help avoid going up against Power or Crows matches would help bring in sponsors.

Could be the crows/powers way in to having sides in the SANFL league comp, would be hard to refuse them entry if they were going to pay a fair portion of the cost needed

I know that is what the article said, but I have heard it was closer to the $100K mark...

Also, there is already a thread started up earlier this morning on this same topic, as below:
