Have been on uncle duty this weekend, so this morning took my twin Nephews to their Under 12 game, Unley v Mitcham.

Having not experienced underage footy for a LONG time, was amazed at the standard of the game.

- Contested overhead marking
- Excellent run and carry
- Mostly excellent footskills
- Excellent umpiring (that was instructional too)
- The size/build of some of these kids

Amazing to see the style of modern footy has flowed down to under 12's, would never have thought it would be the case.

Super impressed.

I get to watch these kids each week, its amazing some of the skill level on 11 year olds.

A kid in my other sons under 10's game stood about 5'10 and would have weighed nearly 80 kg and he is 9

IIRC, Henley were having coaching meetings in the pre-season with all junior coaches playing to the one game style. If you went up or down a grade it didnt matter, the system was the same.

I agree JK, I think the foot skills of kids today far exceeds what we were accustomed to. Although there is no doubt coaching of juniors has come along way since the "scratchys" we played.

Why is league footy one of the only sports that's played almost exclusively on the weekends?

Probably because of the vigorous nature of the sport, the number of players used each week in comparison to the number of players on each clubs list.

Other sports don't have the physicality of footy, so don't require the recovery time that footy requires.

Because people don't understand that you can play it on other days of the week
