What is racism?

Is Eddie's comment racist or is he just making light of an incident that happened a few days earlier? I think the latter.

Were the girls comments racist? If she doesn't mean for them to have any racial meaning but they cause offence to Goodes is it racist? Is she negligent or reckless in tribunal parlance? Is she too young to know better?

I think discriminating against people based on race is poor form, but this outcry at the moment is a bit over the top. Is all the humiliation suffered by the girl and Eddie proportionate to the crime? I don't think it is.

I always thought Racism was a hatred towards someone because of their skin colour or excluding someone becuase of their skin colour.

The Collingwood supporter who said "give it to Goodes because he's black", is it Racist if he replace the word black with Indigenous? Is Sterotyping Racist?
Why the AFL has a Indigenous Round is beyond me. When we have Multicultural round, appreciate the Indigenous players along with all the other cultures that this great game has captured. AFL, Treat all people of all nationalities the same.
Eddie tried to make a joke, and clearly a little too soon, plus people want nothing more then to see Eddie fall.
I think its massivly over the top to start with, it was one young girl amoungst 75000 people.
Its now got to the stage, where people dont know what they can or cant say about people with different skin colour. This will result in people getting treated differently because they dont know what will offend and what wont.

Goodes apparently was called an ape at school. I can understand why he would get upset with that. But is it the effect of the word or the intention behind it that matters?

My view is that it is inappropriate to have the hue and cry every time something like this happens. Especially with the 13 year old girl. The media should be ashamed of themselves for not dropping the story as soon as they found out her age.

The idea that racism only exists in the morally corrupt reinforces the casual attitude to racism - discretion evades the speaker, as it so clearly did with Ed.

Racism exists beyond invective. In fact, it is cloaked in painting the racist as the victim and the target as inflexible.

Don't know the answer, but think the thread highlights the confusion .. Seems we've come a long way but even more education is required.

How many times did Gary Lyon get called an ape in comparison to Adam Goodes? Something that might be amusing once or twice might wear thin after three decades.

The great Viv Richards summed it up best 'when you are black you never truly know what is in a man's heart'. Goodsey would feel the same when Eddie told all of Melbourne his promotional ideas a few days after being the 'voice of reason' on this issue on behalf of the Collingwood Football Club.

Absolutely.

The amount of people who have thrown the "I dont understand?" line out during this situation has completely baffled me.
Are we as a race, as a nation, that uneducated and insensitive to others that we need to have this explained to us why this is offensive?

I've been very disappointed by this. Although, if someone like Eddie McGuire who not only has been educated on this topic but helps educate others still doesn't have the skills or understanding to avoid making offensive comments what chance has Joe Blow on the street got?

Is it really that difficult of a concept to grasp? Surely we dont all need to do a 3 day course or read pamphlets on the subject to make sense of it all?

The AFL have mooted an "indigenous only" TAC cup club forming next season and are contemplating the All Stars being sent to Ireland, being indigenous only.

I'm sure they wouldnt consider either of these if there wasn't great benefit involved, but it just seems to me that the best way to put the lid on racism, is to stop highlighting the differences in people that are essentially all Aussies. By all means celebrate all various cultures at appropriate times.

Currently Indigenous Australians are not recognised in our constitution. They are not represented in our national anthem or on our flag. I'd say we have a pretty exclusive country right there based on race.

I dont see how the flag represents ANY specific race, or excludes any other.

And I wouldnt know what is or isnt in the constitution. I do know it has been amended to give Indigenous Australians more rights than they previously had in this country. Eg The right to vote and to be included in the Census.

Sooo...what you're saying is it USED to be very Pro-England and has since been edited to be more inclusive of everybody?

It would appear so HH3 I guess the question is are we assuming the anthem is now inclusive of indiginenous Australians or is it really inclusive.

I can see that it is now not gender specific but in terms of indigenous Australians and migrant Australians while it appears all-inclusive it doesn't seem to spell it out.

In my mind it is all inclusive but that's just my assumption.
