Alright this topic may cause alot of disagreements but lets try and keep it respectful.

My daughter recently had an Asthma attack while at childcare, it was all sorted she got to hospital all ended well.

Part of my job at work is im a pool lifeguard which means i have my senior first aid and cpr quals always up to date.

Had my wife been at home with my daughter it could have been completely different as she has no taught knowledge or skills in first aid.

She is now going to do a Senior First Aid course Friday.

Should all parents be forced to have a basic first aid certificate.

Even other kids in the household should have it (or knowledge at least to call 000) if there is another child in the family with a life threatening illness.

It's retarded mate, you need to be 18 to watch porn or drink an 16 to get a licence, any idiot can become a parent and have no training whatsoever in raising something that is totally priceless: A human being.

Agree, i have taught my 4 year old how to do compressions. Obviously at her age she would not know when to use it BUT she quite enjoys pretending she is being a doctor and it has caught her interest which i hope i can develope as she gets a bit older and a better understanding.

Also a good way into getting her to practise her counting.

Its not just required for taking care of children either. I had to look after someone that was in a bad way Saturday night. Ive dont First Aid before, but dont have a valid certificate anymore. It didnt require hospital, but they needed me to keep a pretty close eye on them. I did what I was taught and avoided it escalating to a hospital situation.

Im currently working it out with my work to become the First Aid Officer for this place. Just gotta get time off to do it.

My wife has to have her senior first aid as part of her work. My old work paid for me to have emergency first aid about 6 years ago. We bought a house with an inground pool and had our first kid about the same time 15 months ago. I went and got my senior first aid for those 2 reasons as I felt it was my responsibility to have with 1 a pool, and 2 a kid. I will continue to update mine every 3 years, and if the wife changes jobs or stops working I will make sure she keeps hers updated.

Hopefully we never need to use it, however I couldn't forgive myself if something happened and I was too lazy to do a simple course which could be the difference between life and death.

Don't they do the basics at school these days? Im sure I did the old DR ABC and CPR stuff at school. Not just parents but everyone should have a basic knowledge.

I did mine through my school in Year 11 during Outdoor Education/Aquatics...only the people in those classes did it though.

Not sure im now 29 and both my children dont go to school so not sure. The new one is

always had to have mine for work. most people wouldn't think it's needed until they are in a situation where they do. Bit hard to police though.

Agree, the first thing that come to my mind was how it would be policied and that it would be extremly difficult. (what you going to do take their children off them if they dont update).

Maybe it could be something the government could subsidise like when you have your children fully immunised you get a small portion of money. A reward as such.

Its amazing when you have training often enough how under pressure it just becomes natural to you.

The first time i had to use a defib for real was very freaky though and something ill never forget.

If you're a good enough shot you wouldn't need it.

Anyway, back on task, my entire family have done a St John's course.
I'm relying on my SLS training 30 years ago. I think this is a good wake up call
New years promise now.

I'd like to see free basic first aid training offered to parents when their kids are diagnosed with something that you could reasonably expect the parents to need first aid knowledge to treat something resulting from that diagnosis (asthma, epilepsy, food allergies and so on)

First aid training should be encouraged. I did one recently and found quite a bit had changed since the last time I did it 5 years ago, especially DRABC changing to DRS ABCD. It was really worthwhile and I think there should be some form of assistance / support for more people to do it.

Excellent topic WHUFC .. Was something I always meant to do once I got around to having a family, but sadly/badly I never did.

I had the training/certificates etc about 25 years ago, but obviously brain capacity has diminished in that time and I wouldn't know enough if needed to be called upon these days.

A bit like Jimmy, this will hopefully serve as a wake up call.

As for the topic in general, I think the government should cover such training for parents of children with known issues (as per PAFC's post).

Also think that Basic levels of swimming classes should be covered for children, but that's a whole other topic.

Perhaps basic first aid and basic swimming should be part of the school curriculum.
Not sure at what age level, but before mid-teens I suspect.
IIRC, I did a basic swimming certificate via my school in grade 5 or 6.
