Rnd 2 - Eagles v West @ Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval (Sat 6/4)

Postby Big Phil » Sun Mar 31, 2013 9:04 pm

The Eagles copped the biggest blast of Mick Godden's coaching career at half time last week and the side ran over the top of the Double Blues away from home. The Bloods kicked 10 goals in a quarter against the Dogs, faded late and held on for a nice win at home. This one will be a very interesting contest...

If the Eagles that played the second half against Sturt turn up Eagles all the way !!
Eagles have a lot more avenues to score this year thanks Ron Fuller again ;) .With some forward depth in the seconds !!

Can the Eagles fit Zac Fitzgerald in to that forward line? Is 4 big guys too tall? Would like to see him in, but not at the expense of Staple. Wouldn't mind seeing Grocke trialled at CHB.

Eagles narrowly because it's at home. They'd better not play like they did in the first half at Unley though.

Aerie, totally agree with you about playing Grocke at CHB, have been saying this for three years. Grocke would give run, chase and a chance to spoil high flyers. Fitzgerald cannot be allowed to wither in the reserves, too talented. He is a great kick for goal and is a very heady player. Hentschel has a very high opinion of him. Could not afford to see him go to another club.
If/when Salter is fit I would like to see him play at fullback for better use and penetration of the football. A main defensive set up of Grocke and Salter would revitalise a dour looking defence.

If West play attacking football, then they will win by 4-5 goals.

If they decide to play the Noah game plan, then it will be an ugly slogfest with the Eagles grinding a narrow win.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

A quick check on the injury list and only 2 notable players - Daniel Kirk (Ankle) Indefinite and Jarred Allmond (Heel) becomes available this week, perhaps a run in the reserves this week.

Zac Fitzgerald with 6 goals in the reserves, surely has to come into consideration for selection this week.

Way back in 2005 North were really struggling for a Centre Half Back. Grocke was playing good football in the reserves but at that stage struggling at league level as a forward. We were screaming out for him to be tried as a Centre Half Back. He looked a natural for the position with his athleticism and aggression.

The coaching staff didn't agree. He ended up at the Eagles where he has obviously been a fantastic forward, but if I am any sort of judge I believe that he could have been an AFL Centre Half Back.

Yes, the combination of Fitzgerald looking the goods and us needing strength in the key back position is why it could be good for the team. I am fine with Grocke playing up forward, especially now Ainger seems to be capable of being the number 1, as it will give Grocke a chance to play under a little less pressure, but I think a premiership side is often built around a strong CHB and, like McKenzie in 2006, Grocke could be that man. Can always go back to Grocke forward if it doesn't work.

Personally Day starts the year slowly as seen against sturt .Some times he was a hindrance to the team .So why not try Grocke at CHB

My worry up forward is Lane . who could replace him ?

Leave Ellis-yolman up forward, drop lane for the pace of Almond or the hard nosed running of Kane or blood the youth of Appleton. All better options than Lane.
