If you have $5k in small bills after a decent sale, but dont want to carry around a wad of cash, you can deposit it, then head to the shop and pick up a pair of trackies and a Tapout shirt straight away.

Or money laundering...

Adelaide Bank & Bendigo Bank are the 2nd worst IMO, they once approved a $20K loan against my mortgage, took the fees out and then didn't deposit the money into my account, no one could give me any answers and then they finally said it got refused because I lied to them. I had gotten married between my initial loan and the time I wanted the increase, they knew it and the account was joint.
They weren't even going to reimburse me.

Bendigo promote themselves as good for you, but a colleague of mine was paying 4% for Merchant Services in a similar medical practice to mine in 2008, while I was paying the Commonwealth 0.85% - and mine later went down to 0.77%. The Commonwealth was transferring my funds directly to my ANZ business account with no extra fees.

The ANZ, who had originally wanted to charge me more than the Commonwealth offered to match it, after they saw the flow.
(That was in Melbourne. I have a much better relationship with the ANZ in Adelaide, due to family connections.)

For those with Adelaide Bank accounts, make sure you push back cause my new Bendigo accounts were going to be more expensive than my existing Adelaide Bank ones until I kicked up a sink and got them fixed

Don't rely on what they recommend in that letter

Yes, it's an old union thing. The assumption was that work needing to be done to open and close a bank, couldn't be interupted by customers!
The same principle still applies to school teachers too (opening hours are what, 8.45-3.30pm Mon-Fri, not counting pupil free days and school holidays?).
It also grates me that the SDA is so heavy handed on Christmas trading hours, saying their people are entitled to family time. Only thing is, they get to go out as a family and enjoy themselves as other people work to service them!
Modern times call for modern service levels.

I spoke to another family tonight, who works in a bank, and asked him about bank opening hours.

He said the late starting time is mainly due to having to run, process, and file reports relating to previous day's banking, there's also the investment related paperwork to process.

Re 4pm closing, seems to be just the way its been done since way baxk when, although in Melbourne apparently there is a 5pm closing time each night (not sure if thats all banks there).

In Japan banks close at 3:00! On holidays even ATMs are closed! Beat that for hardship!

I've heard that in the eastern states you can go into a bank with say $70 in silver coins and put them through some sort of money counting machine that spits out a ticket with the amount and you can take that to the counter, if it's not your direct bank they take like a 10% handling fee or something, does anyone know if that has started here yet?

I've got a money box full of shrapnel I want to unload.
