Very well said. I have enjoyed the excellent reading and diverse points of view. Who, when and how will no doubt open a can of worms. I would be interested to read ideas on how a 'neutral panel' could be recruited.
Older, wiser and been there. But still love that grassroots country footy.

Great discussion and as someone who previously disliked the notion of caps on juniors I am now sitting on the fence. The difference between the big towns and smaller ones is getting larger and it does need some attention. I can see two 8 team competitions in the HFL in years to come as struggling clubs fold.

On a separate note it was good night tonight at the Ironbank Footy Club with the SANFL launch of their new lottery. 5AA and channel 7 broadcasting from the club. Glen Rosser and all the big wigs from the SANFL were there and given the SANFL sent invites to the HFL committee you might have expected maybe one or two of them to turn up.... apparently not...

Not one HFL committee/board member? That's disgusting, at a time when the HFL need to be getting behind the smaller clubs.

Agreed, definitely something which needs to be discussed because as I'm sure all agree, it is a problem and something needs to be done.

I too am on the fence about the cap, but given the lack of any other options thrown up, it's hard to rubbish it.

I think the need for a cap would be reduced if the clubs who did have 30+ players in a grade were more willing to encourage kids/group of kids to go to other clubs. I completely understand their reluctance, but in reality, if the junior grades turn into competitions where there are 2/3 strong teams who flog all other teams by 25 goals / teams are filled with younger grade players / teams forfeit.... well that is not good for kids development on either team.

Incentives for bigger clubs might be, an agreement whereby kids cleared to play at another club for a year were cleared back to the original club. Subs are paid to the original club. Etc etc.

Most clubs are happy spending 2-5k per week on A grade mercenaries.

Why not take some of that money and pump it into the Juniors?

Went passed mt barker oval today saw a sign out front re trial game dates. Had mt bk v happy valley sat 17th march, can anyone confirm if they are playing sat 16th or sun 17th? Would be a good hit out to have a look at with both teams being premiers in there leagues.

Saturday 16th with A's kicking off at 2:30pm and should be a high quality hit out (pretty sure all grades are playing today)

Should be a quality hit out for both teams. Valley have recruited well again and added strength to a team that was too good for everyone last year. Will be an interesting clash to compare the quality of the two leagues. Will post scores later if I get the chance.

Watched the game to halfway thru the 3rd. Fairly windy and at times wet but a fairly clean game considering it was first game of year. Not knowing both teams lineups that well it was obvious that both teams had a fair few players out. Happy valley only had 2 eagletons playing. Damian eagleton played in the twos with Paul sutton and beagley and grund didn't play. Mt bk didn't have nunan and block out there which would have helped a fair bit.
Mail medalist johhny eagleton had the ball on a string as normal and Scott mckenzie controlled the back half. Mt bk had some good passages of play but didn't seem too have many targets up forward.
Mt barkers new scoreboard was pretty impressive, best spot to watch the action from!

Loved the scoreboard. Don't know how much you can take from a trial, but Valley were dominant in the middle, up forward (felt sorry for Squire's young opponent) and down back. Good hit out and enjoyed the skills on display.

yep looked like mt barker had about 8-10 out from GF side all the top end players
good for the youngsters/Bs (some played about 8 qtrs) to see what it is like to play at that level against an exceptional side. Oby was solid in back and gave a lot of drive, Willo in ruck played well but overall we were beaten in the middle and didn't go in well enough for our forwards - Hilly tried hard at fullback/CHB but you can only punch for so long
the delivery to the two talls in the forward line for the Valleys was great - even with the swirling conditions at times it was usually kicked to their advantage - and their runners never stopped - always seemed to be on their own within range of goals.
good luck to Valleys this year - game was played in great spirit and yes the scoreboard looked great :)

Judging by the numbers on the track the roos might need a few lads playing 8 quarter Saturdays this year!

Really?? I guess that's what happens when you pay ridiculous amounts of money to blokes who don't stick around the club for a drink or two. And I heard they want a C grade!!!

Just out of interest, what do you propose spending this cash on?

Wont be doing anything more than qualifying for finals in either comp due to coaching central districts reserves.

Also heard that Blackwood and TV are getting extra points for 2013 as well as Nairne and one other team.
Whats the point of having a points system when a club like Blackwood can get extra points. They have clearly the strongest depth of all clubs but need to get extra points to be "competitive"???
And don't get me started on the TV mercenaries!!!
I seriously don't understand the way the board thinks!
