WHO WILL WALK IF - Crows/Port Reserves discussion

Postby Mark_Beswick » Fri Mar 15, 2013 6:10 pm

If the SANFL caves in and allows Port and Crows to field reserves sides in the SANFL, will you continue going to games.
I spoke to a lot of supporters at a west v glenelg trial last week and there were numerous (not all) supporters who said they'd throw in their membership and wouldnt bother with a comp where two teams focus i not about winning. (See what it has done to the VFA/VFL).

I doubt I'd go in 2014 if they allow this to happen and have these concerns

1. Sponsiorship will gravitate to the popular power and crows reserves sides
2. Volunteers will see a career path through to the crows / power afl side
3. Kids will gravitate to the reserves sides and no longer support their sanfl clb especialy if they are not doing well. I teach kids and winning teams attract support
4. Top up players - NO way do I want any junior from my club leave to play against us.

The more I think about it, the more likely I'd give the game away an do something else on the weekend. Maybe we need a petition to present to Chris Davies now and all supporters who are members to make their thoughts well and truly clear to their respective CEO's and presidents befor its too late.

Our competition has too much history and pride to become a B-Grade apologist competition to AFL clubs who we wont even own.

I don't want to see AFL reserves in the SANFL happen, but as long as there is a side called Glenelg, are Tigers or alternatively called the Bays, wear gold and lack and are based on Brighton road, I'll follow them and continue to be a member.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

not sure if I'd give it away but I wouldn't like it and agree with your sentiments re the damage it would most likely cause

On point 3.

How many kids actually follow an sanfl team in the AFL age? I'd say the vast majority wouldn't give a fat rats clacker about the local comp.

Most clubs seem to be doing a reasonable job of making kids aware of the SANFL, some better than others, most school age kids in the Eagles zone are very aware of them

I dont understand the thought that because theres an afl reserves team in the league then their goal wont be winning. Of course they will be trying to win

The key is when these kids become of the age to buy memberships etc. i think this is the main downfall with having afl ressies teams.

Said it many times before:

I will never - NEVER - attend a game featuring an AFL reserves team.

I will still follow Glenelg, unless Glenelg turns into an AFL reserves team. Then I walk.

Why is winning and developing mutually exclusive? Theres been two or three times lately where afl premiers reserves teams have won their state competition

Happy accidents.

If they had to run a player into form, bugger the result of the reserves, no matter what competition they play in.

Just like SANFL reserves! Chuck them in there if you like.

Will still go and support Norwood but couldnt promise that id see the whole game. Fair chance of being evicted because the heckling and abuse towards the AFL sides wouldnt stop from the moment the ball is bounced.

Sure are, pretty similar story across the board. On our eastern mound it's like feeding time at the zoo when the promotional wagon shows up.

IMO, proportionately as many children and teenagers at SANFL footy as there's ever been. More for them to do as well, Unley has been a prime example. Jumping castles at Noarlunga, Elizabeth, Norwood and family friendly areas as standard - Woodville probably the pick of them.

Given the crowds of one of our "local" AFL sides, perhaps it's fair to say that not a terrific many more of that vast majority could give "fat rats clacker" (sic) about them either - particularly in light of relative expenditure and, above all, exposure when compared to SANFL footy on the whole.

A lot of people on here take their kids to SANFL Mickey!

The other aspect is that a lot of people are becoming fed up with corporatised sport - the SANFL is suddenly a very attractive alternative which is family friendly in many ways. Jumpy castles, kick and catch on the oval, free and easy parking in nearby streets, comparatively cheap admission, etc.

I would't agree with that, a lot of younger kids know a lot more about the SANFL than people realise, I think the real problem is keeping them interested when they become late teenagers/adults, there is so much else available to them to take their interest away

Absolute crap.

There are a heap of kids at our local club that wear SANFL jumpers proudly.

Where do you think kids as young as 10 go from club footy if they show a bit of talent?
