Read some of Prof. Daniel Lieberman's stuff and make up you own mind. It's strange that the foot is the only part of the body that we need to physical support and manipulate as they don't function correctly.
My missus is a public podiatrist and a damn good one. She makes no money out of prescribing orthotics but is far more educated on the matter than yourself and some whack-job critic you're quoting.
I would agree that sometimes, people are prescribed orthotics by the private sector at exorbitant prices but to declare orthotics the biggest con ever is a blatant lie.
It's like saying chiropractors are the biggest con ever. I believe a lot of private chiros only do half a job to keep you coming back but there is undoubtedly health benefits related to spinal manipulation etc.
