at the club, they hide behind a key board, get their mums and dads to ring SAAFL and complain about the way they are getting treated.
So a few FACTS
The playing group signed contracts that had a section in there stating that players must attend all club functions, fund raise themselves with a $10k target which was directly for the players payments , That they would wear club polos etc match days etc ...
they supported 1 function last year Ladies night which they did not organise but attended and drank free grog all night, amount raised about 1K... do the math and you will see that we were still close to being 10k short for player payments.
A number of these players then advised us that they will not be playing with us next season and as a result the committee decided that players that had remained "loyal" to the club would be paid first and those that left would be paid last. But all players will get every cent that is owed by the Greenacres FC for the 2012 season.
Now I don't know about everyone else's club but it is difficult to raise funds for footballers out of season. So at Greenies so it has taken time to work through outstanding payment amounts to suppliers, coaches and players but we are 95% of the way there

We did exactly that and had 10k as the magic number.
On the spend side groups want to spend as much as they can (generally on the players)
So when groups dont support these functions by attending and bringing a couple of mates or their mums and dads, dont buy a raffle ticket, allways have something else on thats more important (like watching a horse race FFS) then the clubs income suffers.
We had to can 3 of our major events last year because we were unable to presell tickets..... groups would not commit.. there was allways an excuse.
So this is the nett result... come the end of the year and suddenly people have the hand out to get paid and the cupboard is bare. SURPRISE no not really
Now I suppose it will be the committee at fault ..... god knows it's never the playing group..... commitment ha never heard of it

What's the point of a footy club if no one actually wants to be there?

Whats the point of being an umpire if you dont aspire to be a good one??

But seriously Turk, have/should Greenacres change its policy regarding recruiting players?
You have an 'A' grade with a number of players who are there purely to receive match payments.... that's obviously not all players, but as you said, enough that it means you can't run social events and fundraise because they do not want to support the club.
You have a 'B' grade who have struggled for numbers and copped some beltings over the last few years.
Do you need to revise the way you do things in order to build a culture of commitment at your club?
If you (as presumably a volunteer) are understandably frustrated by the lack of commitment from players, but then recruit the same type of players this year and again get a lack of commitment then it would be the committees fault.

My question is how do you go about recruiting commitment? ask all the questions, the player gives the answers you want to hear and then 4 months later after their non attendance at 2 functions what do you do?? tear up the contract, refuse to pay them...all of this ends ugly.
Build juniors I hear you cry...we are doing that but we wont see these kids in our seniors for 8- 10 yrs. I think I was at Jet Park last year when Unley celebrated 20 yrs of junior football ???
and look at your results. What a stellar season for Unley.
Seems like its magic wand time at Hicks Park .......but some people better be careful what they wish for
