What a joke of an article. Sheedy and Clayton are well into their 30's and certainly aren't the only two retired SANFL footballers to finish their careers in the country in the last 30 years. You could just as easily say that the introduction of two more AFL teams and the recent trend towards mature age recruits (Duigan, Rowe, Puopolo, Spurr, Callinan, Lower etc etc), players all in their prime mind you - contributes to the standard dropping more than country clubs paying players 'on the fringe' or well into the end of their careers.

Going by the Clearances list, it looks like Ramblers tried to get a Clearance for Levi Konitzka, who I believe is a nephew of one of their past captains.

I think I read that he had signed with Sturt (originally from Waybacks in Port Lincoln), and presumably got a clearance to a SAAFL club if he didn't make it SANFL level.

Looks like the SAAFL club now denying clearance to Ramblers.

If you read the article the first line says it is also being cause by the increase in mature age recruits.

Having said that, I think it is right on the money to be honest. If you aren't going to make it to the AFL, or if you are on the way to retirement why would you play in the SANFL for peanuts when you can earn some really good $$$$ playing country footy, training once, maybe twice a week. I've had that exact conversation with a few guys over the last couple of years - I think the days of guys playing out their careers in the SANFL after retiring from AFL are just about gone with the amount of money in country footy.

I think you're spot on there GWW. I am unsure of Meningie however ... losing Cuneen, King, Bruggerman, Ferenci may test them?

I noticed that Ferenci's clearance to Border Districts has been denied twice. With a third one now pending.

I wonder whether the reason for denying the clearance is because a contract was signed with Meningie for season 2013, and if so, I wonder if the contract he signed was/is binding..?

If he signed a Community Football Board contract it is binding and if Meningie stick to their guns Ferenci will not be going anywhere. I know some people think if he is not going to play for them why not just release him. I think they are well within their rights to make him sit out of football. It is time these money hungry merchants understand that simply cashing the dollar in ruining country football.

That would set a bad precedent if allowable. They would surely have known for the last 2 or 3 months (since talk of Bowen to Mannum was first being discussed) what players they could fit into their playing roster, and then adjust their recruiting plans accordingly.

Alternatively, play 3 extra under 17's.

You are right here. Out of curiosity, how many points were allocated to Meningie last year?

I heard a while back that they were given extra points already but not positive on that. Could just have been rumours.
