The SANFL have poured millions of $s into P.A.M.'s coffers year after year after year and still they are and will continue to be grossly in debt. If any club should go, it should be the Maggies before any one else.

A lower standard is preferable to teams folding/merging/becoming AFL reserves IMO.
In fact I'd like WWT to become just WT and W again even if it meant lowering the standard.
I reckon when our generation passes (30/40 year olds) there's not going to be the crowds like there were anyway, so the standard's going to drop, regardless. Better not to cut up anymore teams. If Sturt was lost there's a potential 5000-6000 fans lost. Fans who might've turned up to say Norwood along with the same number of Legs fans and neutrals hoping to see a blockbuster, if both teams were doing well a potential 14,000 spectators is not too much of a stretch. Same could be said of Glenelg and Port.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

And how will removing the Magpies help a broke Sturt or West survive?

The SANFL needs to change and until it does, then we will continue to see clubs on the brink of collapse. Which is wrong.

It will decrease one clubs expenditure by $1.3 mill a year. Which will ultimately save the sanfl $4mill in the next 3 years of bailouts. Which will mean no more cuts in sanfl clubs revenue.

Extra recruiting zones, less competition for sponsorship etc...

With the sanfl Focus so much on reducing expenditure due to the poor returns via afl revenue its will benefit everyone's overall position . If sanfl wasnt so desperate to reduce expenditure Why would they even consider moving to Adelaide Oval ??

But I'm sure the heads of the sanfl will ultimately sell us out quoting a bunch of revenue figures.

Won't happen, not when the AFL like to schedule Port in the TV graveyard shift of Sat afternoon (early or late afternoon game) sonot too many Sat afternoons will the Adel oval be free when the ABC prefer to do their telecast to fit in with their national programming.

Anyway wont Adelaide oval will only be used for SANFL finals? More like likely to play neutral games at a the modified Footy Park which footy will need for games scheduled in Feb/March (NAB Cup) when cricket have the oval (IIRC). Also they wont want to over use the surface with regular SANFL games more likey to get the occasional Fri night game.

They'll need the modifed Footy Park (capacity 25 000) when Port don't fill Adelaide Oval and it is more economical to play them out of West Lakes!!!

I am reliably informed that this will be the final year of ABC telecasts of the state league comps, including the SANFL.

Sturt should never be in the position they are, it's surely just a case of pathetic management of a club that has done very well in the last decade and have a terrific supporter base.
West and the Eagles have comparable supporter numbers and are aligned next to each other yet one made a smart tough business decision with it's gaming while the other sat on it's hands!
The best run clubs have always been at the top of the SANFL and that still holds true decades later.... Darwinism

So in that case we should have just left West Torrens to fold in 1991?

Really? Who would have thought. Thanks for the insight.

Sturt have made bad decisions sure (plenty), but we have been near broke for decades now too. What we have achieved is fantastic given our resources, yet, we could have done a lot better. So could have at least 1/2 of the other clubs.

Sure it would have been nice to have been smart enough to get in on the pokies bandwagon faster and more effectively. No amount of skillful management decades ago would have predicted that the SANFL would be funded by the expanded VFL and a bunch of machines that rip money straight from stupid people in the community (with all respect to the minority who play what they can afford).

When are we gonna realize the reason clubs are going broke is simply that everyone is paid ridiculous amounts of money in an industry run by fools. They would not last 2 minutes in the commercial world. It starts at the afl level and goes thru the state leagues and is now sending clubs broke in local leagues. It's not rocket science. It is a pity and the game we all love is being destroyed at its fabric..... R I P :D :D

Pokie machine and licence - $65 000
Salary Cap - $350 000
Being lectured on financial management by a West Torrens supporter - Priceless!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

why can't Sturt & West sell their assets & "piggyback" off the remaining clubs? They will become debt free & still play footy. We only play 9 home games, so do the other sides. The ovals aren't used EVERY Saturday in the winter, they can use Our clubrooms if needed PLUS Adelaide Oval will be available Friday nights & Sundays. Unless we become selfish & let them die.

Shows how much the redvelopment has stuffed 2nd tier sport up, no SANFL Finals or a Shield Final at Adelaide Oval.
