I was hoping that I'd misinterpreted this when it was mentioned elsewhere. I cant see that the club has a future beyond 2014 if that's the case.

Unfortunately not... it skews how big the loss really was... I understand accounting rules would say you have to include in this column or that, but I think the club should have disclosed at the AGM that the loss was really much worse.

Certainly not North in the early 2000s nor South in 1990 but in both cases the legue was very keen on an 8 team comp.

In 1994 they did offer to pay out Sturt's existing debt if they could find a suitable merge partner

My view has always been that the SANFL isn't really interested in preserving the league anymore. The league puts almost no effort, certainly no $$$, into helping out the clubs...

I understand the concern about setting a precedent, you bail out one club, then you appear obligated to bail out others, plus what incentive is there for clubs to do the right thing if the league does bail them out?

Still, I'd like to see the league come out and either say that or explain there reasons for abandoning clubs...

Matt Benson suggesting the AFL should support SANFL clubs more...

"Sturt have made their fair share of bad calls in the past and have to stand up and be accountable for those decisions, but if football does not find an equitable way of transferring some funds from the top to the grassroots, then the price it will pay will be the loss of clubs like Sturt," Mr Benson said.

Have to admit... in 20 years, I remember only one season where the board admitted they made mistakes. In fact, you wouldn't even know mistakes were made unless you brought it up yourself... geez I find that comment annoying...

Good on Benson for admitting it IMHO, read that article and thought it came across well. At least he's attempting to take some responsibilty for previous poor decisions.

He's spot on as well re the payments from the AFL to the SANFL, for producing elite level players the clubs receive a mere fraction of their market value. But who controls the market? The people doing the buying. Nice one.

The attitude at the AGMs is completely different.

After a fantastic AGM a few years back, where the board did admit it made some mistakes and did a great presentation, the following year Matt said to me they were changing the format to ensure they didn't get questons all night long like the year before.

I almost fell over.

Look, its a tough job, GM or board member. I'm not saying I have all the answers, I'd seriously doubt that I do, but there's nothing wrong with making mistakes, just report on them, what you've learnt and so on, people are way more forgiving that way.

X2

Its all over people . The fight was lost no matter how capable we were of winning.

Looks like Sturt is willing to take a fall in the 14th round.
