What would the national selectors be thinking of Ponting's domestic form?

Thats my point. He is averaging 140 at shield level and only 6 at international.

Yet they need to replace he and Hussey with someone, other than Hughes, who is averaging about 40 at shield level.

It shows to me the difference between the two levels is significant and also that we have plenty of world class bowlers playing shield cricket but not so many batsmen.

Likely points table after todays play (without NRR or NSW v Tas taken into account)

Victoria 7 3 2 0 2 0 22 0.993
Queensland 7 3 1 0 2 0 22 1.162
South Aust 7 3 3 0 1 0 18 0.834
Tasmania 6 2 2 0 2 0 16 1.395
NSW 6 2 1 0 3 0 15 1.194
West Aus 6 2 4 0 1 0 14 0.684

Or is it a case of how T20 cricket has changed the longer formats.

I really believe t20 has hugely benefited the bowlers as they have now been forced to be creative (slower ball bouncers etc etc), they have alot more experience bowling in pressure situations and also get to see alot more of batsmen than they would have many years ago.

Captains have also been forced to be creative in their field settings and use of bowlers.

Batsmen on the other hand, have created bigger hitting areas but have completely lost the art of building an innings and patience. I would be interested to know how many times batsmen have hit over the 150 mark this season. There wouldnt be many (Ferguson is one i can think off) despite todays cricketers being the fittest they have ever been.

Could raised fitness levels be a bigger advantage to bowlers, being able to bowl longer spells at a greater fitness, also most teams carry an allrounder these days so pounding a 4 man bowling attack at shield level is a rarity.

I thought Ashton Agar was the new wonderboy spinner. it looks like he has gone alright.
