Like has been said, if Smith and Watson play, it's because of lack of talent in Australia, not because the 2 mentioned are any good.

Mal brought up his technique Inzy being fat wasn't a flaw but his footwork wasn't great, relied on his eye and his running between wickets was a massive flaw.

Technique is overrated. Natural talent wins out in the end. Being quick between the wickets isn't important either. Being able to judge a run is though.

He carries the extra advantage of being an outstanding batsman who could soon slot in to the top six for his country, whether he bowls or not. By the age of 21 he was in Australia's Test, one-day and Twenty20 teams, picked on promise and quickly showing the composure of a seasoned professional. There were words of caution about his early elevation, but there was no hiding the excitement about a player who gives the ball air, hits it hard, catches it at will and seems unbothered by pressure.

He has bowled 15 overs in 5 Shield matches this season, he is less of a bowler than Cam White!

296 runs in 8 innings this season, top score of 90. Average of 37

Wouldn’t have minded seeing young Zampa get a gig to tour India rather than a Maxwell or Doherty. Smith I can deal with as he has hundreds under his belt, bowls junk though. Doherty has 2 wickets Maxwell 7 and 1 FC ton (I think) so not losing anything by adding a youngster to a 17 man squad over those stats. Zampa would gain valuable experience being around the side and also could get some time in at one of the training academies they have over there. If I remember correctly a young Matt Hayden was a recipient of a similar style section on a touring squad and he ended up 'sweeping' Australia to a tour victory of India, purely on what he learnt during that time spent training over in India.

Doolan would have been close but being in India and Smiths experience and versatility probably got him over the line.
Throw in the fact Doolan is having his first decent season where Smith has been consistent for a few seasons now would have helped.

Neville only hitting at 32 this season, highest score of 63 this season, not exactly smashing them out.

Ok, so now we are only talking about this seasons form? Ferg then....

Just on Ferg, he probably didn't deserve his ODI call up at the time but he stepped up to the plate. Smith does not step up, because he doesn't have something you seem to think Test cricketers don't need.....Technique.....He gets found out.

Hughes had to go and work on his technique and adjust to make it. Stevey boy has not changed, woodchopper

If we are talking careers Doolan isn't in the picture then with his 30 something average.

Your carrying on like technique is the sole factor in batting, have you not been watching test cricket recently the worlds best bat Amla isn't exactly a text book cricketer.

Are you sure you weren't an England selector in the mid 90's.

I couldn't care less if Smith woodchops his runs in the shield while his doing that he deserves the chances he gets.

Was Steve not just dropped from the ODI side where it is supposedly easier to bat? Now he gets a Test gig

Look mate, let's agree to disagree and see how he goes......again

Please!!!! he can't even get a game for NSW but let's pick him for Australia?
And as for Watson picked. I think he may go straight past Cowan and open in the first test

jeez you obvioulsy didnt read what I wrote, the chance of squad player 15 16 17 getting a game is minimmal at best. The development opportunity for the young leggy and looking to the future of spin bowling for australia (which maxwell, doherty etc arent) there are far more positives than negatives in him being selected at No17 or travelling over to India with the side
