The Bureau of Meteorology has been forced to introduce new colours to some of its charts because of recent extreme heat in Central Australia.

Shades of deep purple and magenta have been added to the forecast map for temperatures up to 54 degrees Celsius.

The temperature range was previously capped at 50C.

The changes occur on the Bureau's interactive maps which are generated by computer models and are used to produce the official forecast.

The maps for Sunday and Monday show an area shaded deep purple over the outback.

Paul Lainio from the bureau says the colours were introduced after temperatures climbed above 47C in parts of South Australia.

"We noticed over the last couple of days that those charts were indicating temperatures in excess of 50 degrees and our colour scale we had didn't match that," he said.

"We added the new colours so we could highlight where those extremely hot temperatures were predicted by the computer model.

The United Nations's (UN) chief climate science body says there is no doubt last week's extreme heat in Australia is part of a global warming trend.

I didn't think it broke any temperature records. Just that Sydney got hot so it was a bigger deal than usual.

Coober Pedy broke a 15 year record last weekend, the hottest place in Australia for 15 years. Does that mean it's getting hotter, when it was hotter 15 years ago? If it regularly happens, yes.

with the increase of temperatures blamed global warning. One sauce is blamed on the methane gass omitted from livestock. serious serious question! Would of dinosaurs (herbivours) produced the same gas? Did this lead to their destruction? Is there a link 2 another site for this? If it could have/did how would of the earth healed itself?

what sort of sauce are you referring to? a tomato-based type, or a gravy-based one? or maybe a little spicy number, such as Worcestershire? But, yes, I too have heard about the methane gases of animals, such as cows, ripping our ozone layer to shreds.

The loudest voices say it's a myth and a conspiracy and as we know, the best way to win an argument is to yell over the top of people even if they have data to back up their claims.

Just keep polluting, its your children and grandchildren that will have to deal with it anyway if it's real. Let them curse the naysayers if it happens.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Shouldn't the government be doing something about it? Nothing will change if it isn't economically viable to the average joe. We are looking at solar, but that is more beneficial to us from a financial point of view.

Just sick of hearing how a hot day or a big storm is global warming. If you look closely at past record temps, you will see a lot were recorded 40-80 years ago.

I agree, single events have been worse in the past and may or may not be worse in the future. It is not these that are the real problem. The issue is the averages ie: 20 years since a colder than average year, Spring rainfall in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges area has (on average) decreased over the past 50 years. This doesn't mean that the total rainfall has decreased, just that we get it over a shorter timeframe which has implications for farming etc. These are more the issues than a single severe weather event. I guess it is easier to see an extreme weather event though and then easier to imagine this link to Climate Change than it is for the long term and gradual change that is the real cause for concern.

Climate change is evident over thousands or millions of years, not tens or even hundreds.

if water expands when it melts wouldn't that make the level rise? I'm not sure, I'm not particularly good at physics.

That's my point, the last 50 or even 100 years are but a mere blimp in the Earth's history. We know about historical climate and CO2 trends over millions of years but not 100 year slices from thousands or millions of years ago.

We should make every possible effort to reduce polluting the atmosphere (not just 'carbon'), but to suggest climate change is responsible for a few hot days or the odd flood is drawing a very long bow with the limited facts we have today.

The theory is not that extreme weather events occur but that AGW will increase the frequency of the them.
