It is an honour to have your colours up there when you win a flag. Defeats the purpose otherwise.

no it doesn't, whoever wins is still on top & gets to reveal the colours.

The reason that the runners up colours are up there comes from the coach of the first clib to have their colours on the West End chimney, Fos Williams. The story of the chimney is as follows :

In 1954 the boss of the West End Brewery decided that if West won the flag, their colours would go on the chimney. Remember that the brewery was not only called West End but was based in the heart of the West End of Adelaide, the traditional area of West Adelaide. And of course West End beer took their colours from West Adelaide Football Club.

Anyway Fos Williams coach of Port got wind of the plan and asked that if Port won the flag could their colours go on the chimney. It was agreed to and when Port won the flag by less than a goal, the Port colours were painted on the chimney. Fos then suggested that given West's courageous effort, they too should be recognised and have their colours also on the chimney. Thus the tradition was born and it exists to this day, even though the West End brewery is long gone.

There was a lot of bad blood between West and Port at the time. Perhaps Fos' suggestion was to salve some of that bad feeling.

The chimney was virtually on Hindley Street. The brewery went from Hindley Street to Currie Street. The Remand Centre is certainly on land that was part of the brewery.
