The Climate Commission analysis is based on an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) "Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX). This report brings together the latest findings on the relationship between climate change and extreme events, and their implications for societal development. The report was prepared by 220 authors from around the world (including three Australians), and took four years to complete. It has undergone an exhaustive review process, and is an authoritative statement from the IPCC".

The Climate Institute Report "gathers research on the physical impacts and consequences of climate change on major infrastructure across the property, electricity, road and rail and finance sectors. It examines the preparedness of businesses and governments to manage these risks and the steps needed to improve Australia’s climate readiness". There is an extensive list of references within the report.

The State of the Climate 2012 report says:

Changes in extreme weather events

Extreme events are relatively rare and identifying changes in intensity or frequency is more difficult than for changes in averages.

There is evidence of changes in some aspects of extreme weather patterns, including fewer cold days and nights and more hot days, hot nights and heatwaves globally in the past 50 years. It is likely that warming of extreme daily minimum and maximum temperatures on the global scale has been influenced by human activities.

Weather associated with high fire danger has shown a rapid increase in the late 1990s to early 2000s at many locations in southeastern Australia.

Heavy rainfall events have increased in frequency over some areas of the globe, with medium confidence that human influences have contributed to this. Long-term global climate trends are occurring alongside natural weather variations. For example, recent Australian heavy rainfall and flooding can be explained largely by strong La Niñas. However, sea-surface temperatures off the western Australian coast have also been at or near record high values as part of a significant warming of the oceans in the past 50 years. Based on relatively limited observations, no significant trends in the total numbers of tropical cyclones or in the occurrence of the most intense tropical cyclones have been found in the Australian region.

and of course this didnt happen 100 million years ago. Im sure the reporters or green peace forgot to document it 100 million years...Opps! humans didnt exist then, so how can it be proven it is only happening now, and is not a 100 million year event, a 200 million year event.

Something like it had happened around or a little before 900AD when Greenland had enough green land to be worth settling by Scandinavian travellers, but the Little Ice Age hit soon after and the colony was wiped out by about 1150AD.

Nah, the Vikings didn't believe in taxes.
They kind of made decisions as they went along about the ownership of things like gold, goods, women...
(And a decent battle axe kept government officials of anywhere they chose to visit at bay.)

Oh I see! Climate change is like forest fires.
Because you know, forest fires use to occur millions of years before humans were on this planet. Therefore all forest fires that happen now are caused solely by mother nature!
Same with species extinctions, erosion, changing landscapes etc.

Sounds complicated and expensive. Solar on the other hand.

These plants could totally replace coal fired, or oil and gas fired power stations, and they work in the dark, or when there is cloud cover, or when neighbours trees shade your roof...

They can also be built in modular fashion with extra modules added as output demand requires it.
In theory each 8 gm Thorium unit can be contained in a 150mm x 75mm x 75mm stainless steel sealed module.

Also, because they are not big and not polluting, they can be local.
In time this will get rid of the need for high tension transmission lines all over the country, which is one of the big current expenses.

Seen a video and did some research on thorium today. I'm sold. I guess it's the same as the electric car. Oil and mining companies would be the big losers, so we won't see any action until we are desperate.

Heat drives bureau back to the drawing board

The Bureau of Meteorology has been forced to introduce new colours to some of its charts because of recent extreme heat in Central Australia.

Shades of deep purple and magenta have been added to the forecast map for temperatures up to 54 degrees Celsius.

The temperature range was previously capped at 50C.

The changes occur on the Bureau's interactive maps which are generated by computer models and are used to produce the official forecast.

The maps for Sunday and Monday show an area shaded deep purple over the outback.

Paul Lainio from the bureau says the colours were introduced after temperatures climbed above 47C in parts of South Australia.

"We noticed over the last couple of days that those charts were indicating temperatures in excess of 50 degrees and our colour scale we had didn't match that," he said.

"We added the new colours so we could highlight where those extremely hot temperatures were predicted by the computer model.

There is, in my view, no doubt the climate is changing.
Climate is always changing - there are cycles.

The place where there is any room for debate is in how much of the change is in excess of what could be expected from the normal cycles, and whether human impact is a major or minor factor in the current climate change.
