I haven't really looked at his performances this year but how has Mitch Marsh going!

Not thinking to replace Punter but he will surely be around the mark in the next couple of years.

I didn't realise Hughes was so young,

He fits the bill perfectly

-young
-hitting shield runs
-already has a test hundred
-most of our greats have had to be dropped once before becoming complete test batsmen
-appears to have a decent work rate and is willing to learn and adapt.

Out for the season with a Hamstring off the bone injury.

Thats the benefit of Hughes is he has played 17 Tests so he knows exactly what is required and where he went wrong.

Thank god he is gone.
Or should it be credited to the new head selectors.

Joe burns 4 100's in 39 innings av above 40
Ferguson 8 100's 120+ innings av below 40

Burns deserves a chance ahead of ferguson.

Peter Forrest, at 27, should be ideal to slot into the side, but is another whose form has subsided this year.
Looked pretty solid rather than swashbuckling in the ODI's he played I thought.

i have just looked at his stats a bit deeper (apart from after his first 2 tests) his highest career average was 59.99 on 1/12/2006. in the 6 years since his peak he only averaged 39. that is a longer decline than i had realised.

just for comparison tendulkar peaked at 58.87 in feb 2002, since then he has 51, and in the same period as ponting (dec 06 to today) he has averaged 53.

My team for Hobart-

Cowan
Warner- Hughes as an opener is knocking on the door, and may take his spot in the next test if he fails IMO.
Hussey- I still think Huss should bat at three, has all the experience in the world and is still good enough to bat at three.
Watson
Clarke
Khawaja- I think he should come in for Ponting and bat at six. Ahead of Ferguson for mine. I think Quiney should be considered aswell.
Wade
Johnson
Siddle
Starc
Lyon

The two left armers did enough for them to retain there spot IMO while Siddle being our best quick bowler to come straight back at the expense of Hastings. Hilfenhaus obviously in the mix aswell. If he wasn't injured Pattinson would be in my best eleven.

Warner made a ton the test before last and is a game changer, a brilliant field and useful change up leggy. he is not going anywhere....i like Ed but long term id like to see Hughes and Warner open together and Uzi in for Punter. Rob Quinney please do not apply. just because your mates with warney doesnt mean you get a 3rd chance

Fair enough WW, Warner's fielding and bowling is a large bonus for him. I think if either Cowan or Warner is out of form or injured, Hughes will come into the side and take their spot.

Watto scored all of his runs in the opening slot which is a position where we fail now. In essence, it should mean that he has longer breaks from dismissal to taking the field.
