Your probably right, I just think our current best 11 is not good enough to win the Ashes, between now and then I think we need to find and develope some players to fit into this side.

imho Starc has the 'potential'

As long as he doesn't become the next pattinson or cummins.

Thank you channel 9 for once again proving your incompetence in not showing any presentation FFS.

Watching Ponting shake hands with the South Africans it is just amazing how much respect he has earnt from everyone around the world it was fantastic to see.

Pretty good review Whufc but i am still a franction unsure on Warner, Cowan and to a certain extent Lyon. I thought Johnson was ok this test, he is much more dangerous than Hilf and co, Siddle is our work horse and obviously disappointed to lose James Patt. Clarke and Hussey were our best batsmen by a mile, Cowan showed a bit has trouble converting starts and Warner is so hit and miss you just cant rely on him.

Khawaja or Hughes will be in but i hope they look at 2 Tasmanians and thats Alex Doolan and Jackson Bird (who should have been in this test squad well before Hastings and Hazlewood).

Yeah Warner is definatly in my undecided bracket!

I like Doolan as well but at 27 his in the age bracket I would prefer they avoid.

I think they need to try and get a young bloke in there. If Clarke was to quit in say 3 years, who would be the next captain, and how long for until they retired. I don't think we want to get into a situation where we are having different captains ever few years.

Doolan to replace punter but make sure in twelve months or so, when huss goes, a young lad needs to replace him...

We have to have one though that is the problem. I like your take on Doolan though.

The next batch is here

Hughes (24) and has already played 17 tests so he knows what it takes and is in great form
Ferguson (28) has actually been decent this year still not up to standard though
Usman (Nearly 26) hitting the ball beautifully in Ryobi and Shield, needs to tighten up and stop giving away his wicket
Doolan (27) Was great early in year and hope he gets a look in but has sort of dropped back a little
Cutting (25) Batting and Bowling has been in great knick, not to replace Punter but a definate player in the future
Moses Henriques (25 nearly 26) Didnt rate him, but i am slowly changing my mind, can really bat he is still a bit mentally immature IMO with his batting, Dont rate as anything but a part timer
Burns (23) Batting ok and again good in the future but not ready yet IMO

and one who last year really impressed me and is a huge talent was Maddinson from NSW who is only 20 but he has dropped away a lot this year, definately keep on the radar though

You pick the best 11, regardless of age. Shield competition is strong enough to keep producing good solid batsman for Test level. Ideally though we have another young Ponting/Clarke coming through who can push for selection at a young age and go on to perform at a high level for a long time!

Really whose the last solid test batsmen the shield has produced, we currently have Warner, Cowan, Wade and there far from established test batsmen.

The last one would be Shane Watson/Brad Haddin which would have been around 5-8 years ago

Pretty fair assessment of the series there Hammer.
Still have serious doubts over Wade, played 1 good innings at Perth but apart from that his batting isnt great but more importantly I thought his glovework was fairly ordinary. Still not sure he is a viable long term option.
I still maintain Peter Nevill should be there, best glovesman in the land but the NSW selectors have hurt his chances by giving the gloves to Haddin so Nevill now finds himself playing as a batsman at number 3

You say Mitchell Johnson was good this test, he was ok, but only because it was played at the WACA. Got a majority of his wickets from bounces, because his stock ball they don't need to play at,becoz he is unable to swing the ball. If he was playing on a more placid pitch, his bounces would be less effective, and he bowls enough crap to be able to'score off freely.
Starcs first spell of second innings was awful, but he had to lead the attack, which he is not up to yet. With siddle and Pattison in the side, he will thrive, due to they will look to go after him, which he seems to get blokes out when they go after him. Along with his abilty to bowl some absolute gem wicket taking deliveries, he will only benifit from a prolonged stint in the side, learn consistancy, become more patient ,plus, the english conditions will suit.

Huss was 30 when he debuted, has played for seven years and has just ticked over 7000 runs

Lets say Doolan plays until he's 35, and he averages 10/12 tests a year that is 80 tests, he'd go close to 7000 test runs.

Doolan is "young" enough

Good assessment there.

Chuck in Lynn too as one for the future but he has struggled this year.

Yep i rated maddison too on last years form still learning his game though at 20, hopefully he gets his chance in 3-4 years.

Fair enough, I would just love to see the injection of youth in the side, much like when Punter and Clarke were young. I'm looking at that side and thinking there's no next test captain, and if it was a Watson for example then he would only be the man for a year until he retired.

Will blokes play until there 35 these days, sportsmen in general seem to be retiring earlier, and with cricket and t20 they can make comfortable earnings alot quicker.

Mate playing test cricket (10 tests a year) and one of T20 and one dayers, chuck in some cheap 4 week coin at one T20 "tournament and blokes can earn upwards of seven figures. Once off-field earning are added in.

If I was on that money I'd be playing until I was 35 at least....

I'm just thinking you can earn more in a shorter space of time. You don't need to play until 35 to retire comfortably.

We are seeing it both ways, some are retiring from t20 to extend test careers but alot are retiring early from test cricket to concerntrate on the shorter forms.

Will be interesting in the next five years as to whether there will be trends or not either way.

Test series have already been cut down to three match series except for ashes and you don't need to be a test cricketer to make decent coin from the game anymore.

All of a sudden Quiney is out of consideration after getting a few decent rocks from the best bowling attack in the world.
