Didn't say that.
I said his continual selection over the past two seasons has held back the progress of the Australian side.

Mate a 23 year old who averages 43 in the shield!

Khawaja would be my pick.
Doolan from Tassie is starting to get a bit of support.
I would like to see Watson drop down the order too.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

That's the idea mate.
When they were ready Ponting was holding them up.

Has Hussey been holding Aus back, there close to the same age.

Punter wasn't his brilliant best last summer but what did he average against the Indians?

Lol ha ha ha

Ferg had been good this year but the years when Ponting was holding us back Ferg was spudding it up and lucky to get a gig in the worse batting line up in state cricket!

Ok.
I will agree with you guys.
Ponting had earnt his spot on form over the past two seasons and hasn't held up the progress of Australian cricket.
Smashed by the Poms and beaten by a mentally tougher South Africa.
Don't say but we beat India because they are rubbish.

Do u honestly believe Punter was our only problem those two series!

We might have got closer if it didn't look Cook, Trott, Amla, Kallis, Smith were facing an under 13 bowling attack.

Watching England get to 4/152,567 was because Ponting held us back.

Give it a rest. Ponting is gone now so respect a wonderful career and stop flogging a dead horse.

As for Burns he is not ready yet, he is going to be a good player but no i would play him now. We dont "need" someone under 24 especially if they are not ready. 27 year olds are just fine if they warrant a spot.

My top 3 at the moment are Usman, Doolan and Hughes.

Jackson Bird has to be considered for the bowling side of things as well.

Questions over the top order weren't really answered this series. Warner and Cowan were both ok but neither are world class and the same can be said for Watson. All are probably doing enough/have done enough to warrant selection against Sri Lanka though. The number 3 and 4 spots were really weak. Number 4 can and should be strengthened by Clarke moving up from 5.

The contenders with Shield averages below (all with 1 century this summer):
Alex Doolan (2012 ave 58/career 39) age 27
Phil Hughes (2012 ave 51/career 45) age 24
Callum Ferguson (2012 ave 42/career 36) age 28
Usman Khawaja (2012 ave 39/career 43) age 25
Mark Cosgrove (2012 ave 37/career 43) age 28
Moses Henriques (2012 ave 78/career 29) age 25

We have Sri Lanka in Australia, India in India and then back to back Ashes series away then home. Massive opportunity for two or even three from this group of players to get a chance in the batting order over the next 12 months. Especially if Hussey retires after next summer.

Hughes makes the most compelling case and I would be tempted to put him in front of Cowan, but wouldn't for now as Cowan has earnt his spot.

My next Test side would be:

Warner
Cowan
Hughes
Clarke
Watson
Hussey
Wade
Johnson
Starc
Siddle
Lyon

I expect one of the opening positions and number 5 to be up for grabs by the time the Ashes comes around. Hoping Ferguson and Khawaja have good enough summers to be on the touring party.

Fair enough but in all seriousness where is the next test captain. I agree with the 'you play your best available' if your best available is good enough, we are currently not just yet!

The best batsmen this millennium, Ponting, Clarke, Smith, Tendulkar, Kallis, Lara, Cook what do they all have in common, they were thrown in at an early age, they may not have all been 'ready' they were also given the luxury of being able to bat at 6 to ease into test cricket.

We have to have one though that is the problem. I like your take on Doolan though.

The next batch is here

Hughes (24) and has already played 17 tests so he knows what it takes and is in great form
Ferguson (28) has actually been decent this year still not up to standard though
Usman (Nearly 26) hitting the ball beautifully in Ryobi and Shield, needs to tighten up and stop giving away his wicket
Doolan (27) Was great early in year and hope he gets a look in but has sort of dropped back a little
Cutting (25) Batting and Bowling has been in great knick, not to replace Punter but a definate player in the future
Moses Henriques (25 nearly 26) Didnt rate him, but i am slowly changing my mind, can really bat he is still a bit mentally immature IMO with his batting, Dont rate as anything but a part timer
Burns (23) Batting ok and again good in the future but not ready yet IMO

and one who last year really impressed me and is a huge talent was Maddinson from NSW who is only 20 but he has dropped away a lot this year, definately keep on the radar though

Beat me too it thats what i just posted in the 3rd test thread.
