Port Adelaide Future

Postby SDK » Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:34 pm

Did any one else get a definate negative from Keith Thomas's comments on Channel 9 tonight ?
Budgeting for a $2mill loss again next year.
Pinning their future on the Adelaide Oval venture.
Can not continue in the AFL making losses every year.
We are not saying it is hopeless just yet !

Keith Thomas is a very very positive man and it seems to me his comments show the writing is on the wall and a miracle is the only thing that will save Port. Just my take on it, be interested in other thoughts.

Dunno, there's already a topic about their loss in the AFL board and as there 1 disaster includes the Magpies its probably a relevent topic here.
Main question is will they wait till the entire Port Adelaide falls over before there's no more magpies or will the magpies be made one of the first scapegoats and discarded?
Port really have got themselves in a god awful spot where they'll go from having one club, to two clubs to no clubs, mainly because of greed and the lack of care of their own supporters/members.

So Port are 5m in the hole going by Thomas, and that's with 2m from SANFL this year which Whicker has said they borrowed and I'm sure the AFL also gave a million also!
Now that's a basket case.
I think somehow there will always be a Port Magpies because of it's history and relevance to the SANFL.
But the Flowers are on life support big time.

I still remember Fos Williams facing the media scrum outside of Alberton Oval when Port Adelaides first bid for the AFL was announced. Fos emphatically stated that they did not plan to retain a side in the SANFL and that Port Adelaide would move fully across as a club to the AFL. Its my understanding that this was the will and desire of those involved and those supporting the bid at the time. I suspect that the PAFC may revisit this position to address the current loss making situation and are posturing towards it at present in the way that they are feeding information out to the media.

Closing down Port Magpies will not help .... they are not the ones losing bucket loads of money.
Shut down the Power and return the Magpies to the SANFL ...... the later before it is too late !

At the risk of winding UK Fan up into another 500 post tirade....this was an SANFL requirement ( keeping the Magpies ).

Agreed. His body language was far from convincing.

Congrats to Kt. I'm sure telling port Adelaide supporters they are all a bunch of frontrunners was on his bucketlist.

Mission accomplished yesterday.

$4-5 mill increase per annum is a huge amount to turn around for pafc.

The hail Mary plan of AO is going to change nothing.

It was an SANFL requirement that the PAFC agreed too and signed off on!

Dont blame the SANFL, if Port started looking at ways to improve themselves and not blame others they may have a chance of correcting their position. If they continue to play the blame game they are dead in the water.

Did Keith Thomas say Port Magpies posted a profit this year?

If an AFL future for Port Adelaide is looking impossible I wonder if they'd consider coming back to the SANFL full time so they can retain their identity?

That's always the thing with Port that confuses me. Over the course of their journey in the AFL we have heard consistent complaints from both the club and its supporters about the original terms of the license re keeping the Magpies, the ongoing financial deal between the Power and the SANFL and, more recently, the handling of players between the Power/ Magpies 'merger'.

However not one of these deals was forced upon Port, they agreed to the terms and signed off on all of them.

Port Adelaide make Fitzroy look professional. Any companies in Naru willing to lend them money?

they clearly failed in their marketing strategy.

Based on the adams report (1985) if Port entered a national league they should have been based on the club but not the actual club. This would have allowed them to be a composite team that embraced the SANFL clubs that are the opposite to the other Adelaide AFL team, i.e. more working class image etc. Instead Port did the revearse and put 1870 on the back of their jumpers and alienated everyone.

Port should be thankfull the AFL had declared to broadcasters it will maintain an 18 team comp.

The Magpies need to maintained at all costs. They are part of the fabric of the SANFL.
