I've got one of those in the shed now. When it went I got the impression it was the power switch itself that blew - so I haven't chucked it, but I never seem to have the time to pop the back off and look. I got another 6 years out of an electric shaver once by just bypassing its off/on switch and turning it on and off at the wall.

Often the repair needed is trivial but nobody will even look for less then $60, so you decide whether it is worth having a go yourself, unless there is al cheap local repair man who doesn't have the facility to make more out of you by selling you a new one. It works the same with cars. A dealer recently told me my car needed $5000 worth of repairs, but I paid for an RAA inspection while I was visiting Adelaide recently - very little wrong with it in fact.
