Best Players Who Never Played Test Cricket

Postby Failed Creation » Fri Nov 16, 2012 3:26 pm

I've been thinking (a rarity for me...) about outstanding players at Shield level who, for one reason or another, never wore the baggy green.

The first name I can think of is Jamie Siddons.

Your thoughts?

Jamie Cox
Reckon he averaged more than 50 at shield level for about 10 consecutive years.
Aussies had some pretty gun openers around that time though so was always going to be hard to break into the test side

Did Michael Di Venuto play any tests I reckon he averaged over 50 at both shield and county level for a long period of time.

I know Di Venuto played a handful of ODIs for Australia, but never played Test cricket.

Good call. Great 'keeper and an underrated batsman.

Law played one Test, Perth against Sri Lanka. 56* not out. No average. Ponting debuted, out in the late 90s with a shoddy LBW.

There would have to be some from the western Australian sides which dominated the shield in the early 90's

Old timers talk about Sam Trimble from Qld.
While some also suggest KG Cunningham was unlucky, along with Ian McLachlan.

I don't think there were too many WA players that didn't get a shot. The Test side was proliferated by them at one point.

Reid, Matthews, Veletta, Zoehrer, Moody, Marsh, Julian, Angel all got shots.

What about Wayne Holdsworth? He toured England in 1993, but didn't get a game.

Neilsen was a good 'keeper, but he also had Healy, Emery, Berry and Zoehrer around at the same time.
