Yep good game of gaelic that one. Flinders seemed to struggle a bit with trying to blend in alot of new players into a big squad. Showed some real skill at times but also probably lost their way a bit in stages. Once everyone settles they will be very tough to beat.

In the Friday night games Taints beat West Ireland by 5 points i think but the game was a lot closer then that (think scores were level with 5 mins to go). Na Fianna apparently accouted for Irish Aus reasonably comfortably.

The Taints very happy with a win over the Mitchamgoats, cant remember the last time we have beaten them in a minor round game.

Good clash between Onkas and Flinders, certainly could have gone either way! A lot of Irish skill on display in both teams.

Also very impressed with the improvements of the Flinders girls team (for once im talking about football not aesthetics!) some of their players have come along way in a short time, putting on much more scoreboard pressure then other times ive seen them. Back to aesthetics wise, Na Fianna may have improved here from what i could tell?! MBK may know more?

Haha, officially speaking, Flinders girls have improved. They looked to have a more attacking set up this week compared to last week when I saw them.

Off the record, yes, I believe we've improved in that department ;) . Also handy footballers as well. The club has a session on this weekend so I'll report further on this matter after Saturday night!

Also saw a very good game on Sunday. Maybe a dodgy "gentlemans agreement" from the previous week cost Flinders in what was a very impressive performance.

We were unlucky but Onkas were very under strength so I wouldnt read too much into the result.

Western Ireland this week will be a massive test, they are a very good side and have picked up some very handy players. We will have to be at our best to get anywhere near them.

Mens ref roster for State League is up on the website until Xmas. If you are a ref please check it out. The only modification is Anto,s games become Sam Janetskis games.

This weeks 7s games will be Steve Francis doing 2 and Sammy J doing 2. By the end of this week i would hope all refs would have spoke to the new 7s manager so he could put together some sort of refs roster until Xmas.

For those looking at the draw on the website for State League it has been entered incorrectly. As it looks like the Sunday games have been entered for the 18th of November twice.

Just to clarify this sundays mens games are to be reffed by Millsy at 4pm and Christain at 6.30pm

Also Sammy J is unavailable to ref tonights games for 7s so we are looking for a replacement.

The Taints 9.12 over Port Districts 4.4 i think. Port kicked 2 of their goals in about the first 8 seconds of the match so we were under the pump early!

I was told Onkas won quite comfortabley against Irish Australians.

Port's last 3 quarters were average to say the least

Good to have the bye this week & only have to be at gaelic HQ once this week. It also allowed for the good folks of Na Fianna to paint the town many UV colours! :D
Should be a really solid week of games coming up.
More than likely it will be 'heritage round' for Na Fianna as they take on the old foe Saint Brendans, funnily enough we are playing at 9:15 again...
Might be a challenge for both sides to keep their players out of the bar.

We also get to see the big grudge match between Flinders & Port. Will we see a little bit of pre match banter between Snake Eyes & Nev?

St. Brendans far too good for a dissappointing Na Fianna by about 10 points last night. That was the best St. Brendans outfit i had seen with their multi cultral blend, ball movement and traditionally tough physical hard running Gaelic football. I have seen all the teams now and they would most definitely be the equal favourites for the Hannigan Cup if not favourites as its clear their post game culture will only facilitate their clubs growth, strength and unity. I,ll give credit where its due the taints looked hot in the 6 degree 9.15pm game in front of no visible spectators.

The loss of 10 first choice players including the best player in the comp last year "The Situation" has hit us hard and we are struggling to find consistency from week to week in getting our new best 21 on the park. Perhaps if 4 of our first 5 games were not in the grave yard of 9.15pm on Friday it might be easier for "The Club" to maintain players and families attendance. Luckily the horrendous draw we recieved was purely co-incidental  Looking forward to our first SUNDAY game next week in Round 6 which also co-incidentally falls on the day of the Adelaide test match

Monday night is the committee meeting and i would encourage all clubs to have the delegate in attendance as several issues will be voted on and there will be re-structuring and much discussion on the below par, low key start to our season. Maybe it happens to everyone but i am having a lot of people come to me with gripes and issues. i would encourage open discussion on this forum about any and all of the topics im about to list as at very least your opinions will be heard or read by several of the committee.
-we need a new grounds keeper
- no trainer yay or nay
- referee payments
- Why is St. Marys a ghost town this season
-the new roster system
-7s
- promotion and advertising
-appointment of a permanent bar staff
- alternate venue s
-costs
- anything you wish to discuss????

There clearly is no longer a guy like Norm Murphy to do all the work and pick up the slack. It will take a consciencious effort from all involved to improve what is this year clearly a waining competition. The influx of Irishmen should have been a massive plus for our competition but at this stage they come, play and leave. Something needs to be done and everyone needs to do something about making St. Marys a Gaelic hub for families, teams and individuals to once again come and be part of the culture of Gaelic Football SA or we will continue to be Australasias bad joke.

Thanks for the kind St Brendan words Wristy. Like most teams we have been juggling alot of new players and trying to work out our stongest team / positions etc and learning the way a few of the new guys play. Gradually working out our best 19-20 player rotation so hopefully can start getting a consistent lineup out there and continue to improve.

Plenty of good points raised. Dont have a simple answer for any of them sorry but would be good to see some honest discussion on alot of those topics for the betterment of the league.

I remember rocking up a year or two ago when St.Brendans had bar duties and the big Polish Bear had the first and only ever Zaluski Disco. At least it created some atmosphere and was an attempt at livining up the place.
I guess im dirty on the fact that our game last night could have been played in front of a large crowd on a warm Sunday arvo with a great atmosphere with the smell of a barby and plenty of Irish Craic and banter between supporter groups ( Jazz Bazz runs like Llama, Milko wears sun screen at St. Marys etc). Families, friends plus the un-seen addition of beer and cider buying spectators would get around that.
I,ll have a crack at point one for discussion ; ITS TIME TO TURF THE 9.15 TIMESLOT. I GET HOME AT MIDNIGHT EVERY BLOODY FRIDAY.
My proposal FRIDAY 7.15 AND 8.30PM....SUNDAY 2.30, 3.45, 5 AND 6.15
4 Games on a Sunday will allow for the aforementioned atmosphere and things like bar, canteen, bbq and a family area to actually have half a chance.
Its edgy, its crazy, its my idea so i doubt it will get off the ground but FFS we have to try something.

Surely the 9.15 slot, if required, needs to be shared equally.

Alternative venue: a ground in the north to encourage statewide growth.

Referees: The best should be doing the amount of games they want to do and should be rewarded.

A point you didn't raise wristy....How much was paid for the new goal posts? Shouldn't they be straight??

Straight posts and marked lines. You really want it all dont you mate ;)
I have recieved a couple of texts since my initial post so im glad some people care enough to take an interest and stop the bleeding. I was just saying to an Irishman who does do more than his fair share but never recieves any accolades (SF :ymapplause:) that as a teenager i used to drive to Gaelic every Sunday or even steal a car with Major Gunn to get to Sunday Gaelic because i legit had goose bumps about the game, the atmosphere and the culture of what i would experience EVERY given Sunday. Now as i make the 40 minute drive every Friday night at 8pm the only goosebumps are from the fact the valley of uncertainty will be 6 degrees and if i am robbed there may be no witnesses.

I think you will find that a quote was supplied for freestanding straight aluminum goals but a cheaper nastier alternative was agreed upon. Might still be waiting on the substantial grant on it's way from Ireland?? Money better spent on the large water blowing fan??

We have proposed Kilburn as an alternate venue for the past two years which could allow greater participation from the north and more importantly all Sunday games. The facilities at this ground are second to none and the longer we wait for this mystical grant from Ireland the longer the growth of the game will be held up
