Disappearing Adelaide

Postby Cambridge Clarrie » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:31 pm

Was driving down Beckman St, Glandore today and saw that the Beckman St Deli has closed down. I also saw recently that Grimes nursery in the back streets of Fullarton is no more.

Got me thinking about how much has changed over the last 10 - 20 years...

Remember when there used to be plenty of independent service stations, often with a mechanical business attached?

Everything now seems to be part of a franchise network or large scale corporate enterprise. Sad in a way, but then an independent can't compete on price or opening hours... I guess people were having the same conversations when the supermarkets caused the end of the local corner store...

Problem is Clarrie, often its cheaper to buy stuff over the internet and receive free shipping rather than driving/walking two blocks to a privately owned business. The whole retail and service industry is about (if not already) about to be turned upside down.

Gee Clarrie I could have easily driven past you today!

Two independent delis in the area have shut sown now as the Topz Shopz on Anzac Highway is now a franchised chicken and chip shop.

The Beckmann St deli changed owners about 3 years ago but you could tell it was slowly dying.

Those type of shops can work if they do something different or exceptional but if they only want to sell bread, ciggies, milk and papers they won't compete with the on the runs, etc

Petrol station expanding into non-petrol items and extended shopping hours of the bug supermarkets have killed the corner delis.

Are there any milkies still running early morning deliveries?

I wouldn't blame on the run, I know for a fact that they offer good money to local shops (way more then they are worth) when they open a new store. The middle man is killing the industry, and is the person making the most money. I had my last lot of supplements checked by customs to make sure I wasn't bringing in more then 3 months supply. I have been in talk's with a local supplement company about sponsorship and have seen there profit margin and can guarantee I could easily buy from america cheaper then they are buying from a importer.

I was in Tranmere last night, noticed the "On The Run" there on Glynburn Road, seemed to be a service station, bakery, subway, probably 1 or 2 other types of store as well.

Do you know who owns On The Run and where all that money came from?

Peregrine Corporation, The Shahin Family. If you want to see where the money goes, go for a drive up Ifould & Bernalta Roads in Burnside, check out the new ONE THOUSAND square metre home they are building....as if The Sandcastle wasn't big enough!

i agree with coles/woolies being the bullies of the market, but little do people remember that 40/50 years ago these guys were nothing really.

All it takes it some hard work and efforts and anyone or any company can increase sales or their options. They just got the timing right

On the flipside there seem to be alot of Farmers Markets opening up across Adeaide, another is about to open at Parfield Airport where people can have a cheaper and better quality alternative to Coleworths.
