Do most clubs start before Xmas???

Absolute waste of time imo; probably detrimental.

If a club has had a shocker season or 2 and need to demonstrate their intentions early, maybe it has some merit very occasionally.

We will start before Xmas. If it is executed properly it is very important. Gives a great opportunity to some young guys to train with the senior group and build a 'whole club' culture. No doubt numbers are less than they are in January but being involved in exercise and sports science, it never surprises me when someone has a 'breakout/blinder season when they do the hard yards before Xmas.

I always find it interesting that a some people see it as a bad thing to start preseason so early.
I know we don't all do it, but everyone should be doing a decent exercise session 4-5 times per week regardless of whether they play footy or not.
Why is it such a big deal to have a couple of those sessions as coordinated footy training? I mean, you were going to be/should be doing exercise anyway right?

i would imagine several clubs would... Not detrimental imo if done correctly... The best pre season i ever had was when the side i trained with started in early november, late october... I certainly understand the argument why starting after xmas is better, i reckon it really depends on the group you have. I feel the group we have at the kennel it will be a big positive to start early.

NO, NO, NO !!!!!!!!! ;)

Those who are motivated will do it anyway. I think it drains the group and makes the season too long.

The reasons against it are mental/emotional rather than physical.

Understand where you are coming from. But id argue that comes down to programming. I good coach and program will fluctuate depending on the
need for mental focus and emotional fatigue.

Like i alluded to in an earlier post, understand and implementing this stuff is my full time job so i probably see it very differently to others.

There are those guys that are unlikely to rock up before x-mas no matter what.
The guys that are motivated are likely to go to footy and do more. Its the guys in the middle. It might only be one or two sessions they end up going to but keeping the group together is important.

When we do pre x-mas work, it is mainly ball work and beach sessions. No one wants to do repeat track work in the heat. Keep the group engaged, set up team building challenges, run circuits, do strength work and start to lay down broad concepts for the game-plan.

I always rock up before Christmas because my attitude is "I could go for a run by myself, or I could go for a run and have a kick too with a bunch of my mates". I think the concept is pretty simple really...

We never used to do it, but it seemed like every time we tried to recruit someone they would say, "i'm just going to have a run with such and such, who have already started". You rarely see those blokes again if they fit in well with the other club who have already started training. That, as well as getting the boys together a few times after not seeing each other for a while isn't a bad thing. But unless you are already into running and training every other day, i don't think it has much effect on your fitness if you're only gonna do 2 nights a week with the footy club 4 weeks before Xmas

A lot of our younger players have already started and are hanging out for preseason to start, so why wait?

Works the other way just as much.....Blokes will front up wanting a run at the Club because your doing a pre Xmas session only to disappear in the new year to Clubs they intended to always play with but who only scheduled their training to commence in the new year.....New recruits who come to your Club and then go on the pretext of wanting to commence training asap possibly did not like what your Club had to offer after having a look. Annoying I know.....but sadly sometimes true.

You can often pick the blokes who did a good preseason. If you want to have half a sniff of keeping up with any of our blokes come September, you need to start pretty soon.

Hearing some whispers of some very handy recruits and some rumoured losses strangely hanging around the club for Westies.

FWIW, I think it's a bit slack if clubs don't do training pre-xmas. Like others have said, it keeps the group tight, and you get to know new guys better and obviously improve or maintain your fitness.
IMO, pre-xmas sessions are not a waste of time. Yea we all eat and drink a lot over the xmas break, but from my personal experience I don't lose much fitness over those couple of weeks (and I am not naturally fit at all, or do any running over that time).

You can tell what blokes are committed to the cause based on who rocks up and does the hard yards in November/December.

Our situation was more verbally over the phone. They were looking at starting training. We weren't training yet. They went somewhere else that had started

Hectorville are starting preseason next Wedneday (14th November) for a few weeks - agree that it is a good chance to get to know the guys, and any new players, better and work on some of the team play stuff going into next year.
Disagree with jetters that it is detrimental, can understand that it doesn't always benefit all players/playing groups but wouldn't see too many clubs going backwards because of it.
