There was study published recently that received a fair amount of coverage.
Using a database called "The Million Song Dataset" (actually about 464,000), various characteristics of rock, pop, hip-hop, metal and electronic tracks since 1955 were analysed and compared.

One parameter of timbral variety shows a peak in the late 60s followed by a gradual decline, then another clear decline from around 1995, so not a bad call REB.

Yes and No. Music is alive in the pubs and clubs that have music. Problem is Record companies would rather use shows like the x factor, The Voice and other shows to find a star. Bands are finding it harder to get their music out there unless it is word of mouth or you hear them walking past. My kids all listen to what ever I thrown on the turn table. They prefer The Beatles to what their mates are listening to at school.
