Angus Monfries is being paid nearly half a million dollars a year to play football.

Am I correct in thinking that his salary is higher than a SANFL club's allocated salary cap?

Ill actually give Rucci some credit, on Sat morning on 5AA he spoke strongly of how AFL reserves sides cannot come into the SANFL as it would wreck the competition.

 still doesn't take away the fact he decided to run with the story on a rather sensitive time for the Sturt FC.

I think the developments in the WAFL add validity to the story

The SANFL is now the only league not fielding AFL reserves teams

Why splash it across the back page with a sensationalist headline that the Crows have 'plans' (current tense) to buy Sturt?
What is the current status of these plans? How do you actually buy an SANFL club anyway?

Then spend half the article explaining some of the reasons why it is a non starter!

A bizarre approach to journalism, a story given way too much prominence with a tiny retraction of sorts buried in the paper on Saturday.

Give it to media students as a case study of media sensationalism.

The Bali Bombing. Facts are, it's a journalist's job to run with something deemed newsworthy. Do you think that every 9/11 now & in the future, there will be no newspapers with depressing stories published in them? I know the story clashed with the Bali anniversary but if Rucci didn't do the story, someone else would have. They're a cold bunch but get used to it. :(

Sturt's only option might be to merge ....West Adelaide combo would give them back the Hills where Sturt are traditionally strong in recruiting and development.
Either way they would need to merge with a smaller supporter base club ( e.g. South ) to give both sides a lift.... in other words not Norwood !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Start by playing some night games @ Coopers Stadium as Sturt usually turn up in numbers there when they play the Redlegs. Maybe change Unley games to Coopers @ night when they play Norwood or go the other way and only play there against neutral team ??? Sturt v North where both clubs are reasonably close to Norwood should work.

Can someone explain the origin of the Sturt debt? Don't seem to be big spenders on facilities, one of few part time coaches, salary cap same as others and reasonable membership. Why are they such a financial basket case?

it seems like it has just accumulated over the years. Remember, they are $50,000 down the gurglar straight away every year because of the cost to hire the dingo fence.

Esssentially it all comes back to gaming. The debt was incurred to set up their pokies venue on Unley Road and to purchase the sub lease to the Castle Tavern. This is around 2005. Like a few of the clubs they had to relocate their pokies to a main road site. Whether Unley should have been the place for pokies is another question but for a number of years there were restrictions on how far they could go. Setting up on Unley Road was never ever going to be a cheap undertaking either and i don't think they own the building rather pay rent as well as debt repayments.

They got into the market a bit late for pokie venues and missed out on the bigger returns that were to be had during the previous years. Now due to a combination of factors the return on these investments has not grown as expected or forecasted in budgets.

that is the main reason anyway as i understand it.
