i remember as a kid watching my brother play Div 1 and the quality was amazing people like waterhouse, petrus, sibbs (at full flight) Ozlins (still a gun) etc
and even my first year i played div 1 having the play against fracka, ratters, mclean, robbo, rocco, pete thomas etc was crazy.

but 2 years ago when i finished i personally thought it was a bunch of hacks (with the exception of a handful) who were there to argue and even fight (happened 1 or 2 games)

whats other peoples thoughts..

I tihnk the standard is dropping everywhere not just PDCA. I can't comment on PDCA back in the day, but I think currently most Div 1 sides have maybe one or two very good players and then a handful of players who are average, the depth just isn't that great, and that is evident in most sides change bowlers.

Spot on, Smithfield's Grade 3 side in the mid 90's would beat most Div. 1 sides nowadays but we didn't even win a flag back then.
Salisbury North & Elizabeth were the front runners and there were no weak links in their first 11.

Keep in mind the legend is growing for the sides in the mid 90's (And I reckon Westies won 3 flags in the 90's LM)

I started playing Grade 1 in 92 and it was pretty bloody good. However, I can assure you that the really good players these days are still damn good cricketers, and would more than hold their own during the 90's.....Its just there aren't as many.

The only difference is the depth of the sides apart from the current top 2 is nowhere near as good, which then creates Grade 1 as a whole being weaker.....which it very much is these days. Some of the sides going around in Grade 1 are a disgrace.

Thats a spot on comment Oz, parafield gardens side last year in grade one was just deplorable. i only started playing seniors back in 2001 but we were in grade 3 and the standard then to what grade 2 is now was so much better. Virginia for example have had the same side for so long, they were average side in grade 2 a few years back and are now that in grade 1

Haven't played in the comp for a couple of years now, but in the time I was playing the level of the comp certainly dropped. A number of strong clubs have left the comp, and the some players coming to the end of their careers there isn't the level of talent coming through. There are still some very good players running around, but no where near the depth that once existed.

some teams have always had talent.. salis west is probably the top of that list but others have become woeful! take that fight with eastern park a few years back, who throws punches at cricket! i dont know the ins and outs of that day but still crap!

Virginia are a sad excuse for a grade 1 club! last time i played them they had supporters abusing and threatening out players. and then the players did the same thing the second time.. im ok with banter and everything like that but for 1 dont go threatening blokes and 2 they were getting hammered so shut up haha
