The South Australian Political Landscape

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

Yeah the polling wouldn't have taken much of that latest Redmond gaffe in but no doubt the government will keep hammering it and I wouldn't be surprised if that shows up in the next poll.

The Hills Courier reckons it could be a Killer Blow

Isobel Redmond’s gaffe last week, during which she outlined her desire to cut 25,000 SA public servants, could be the killer blow to her tenure as Liberal leader.

The subsequent claim several hours later that she “answered some questions incorrectly” has done little to stop the bleeding to her reputation or the damage to the Party. The timing for Ms Redmond could not have been worse.

Already under pressure from within her own Party to take a more robust fight to the Government, Ms Redmond has now alienated herself from potentially thousands of voters by declaring, albeit mistakenly, that she would consider slashing one in four public service jobs.

Before last week’s gaffe her problem was largely contained within her own Party.

But that bushfire has clearly jumped those containment lines and it now has the potential to race through the wider community. And the Labor Party will be on hand to fan the flames.

All this mess is of her own making. It will increase the pressure on Ms Redmond’s colleagues to act and it is difficult to see any amount of apologising and self- admonishment holding off the inevitable.

Yeah but they wouldn't be wrapped in news paper. Fish shops did that for 100 years until suddenly some bright spark said you can't do that anymore because it will cause cancer, high blood pressure, dementia, ingrown toe nails and dandruff.

South Australian Greens MP Tammy Franks has been described as an unimpressive witness by a magistrate who found her guilty of failing to lodge tax returns for a decade.

Magistrate Simon Smart rejected the upper house MP's evidence that she had been unable to comply with a final notice because she could not get the relevant details, as she was going through an acrimonious split with her husband.

In Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, he found her guilty of 10 counts of failing to lodge returns between 2001 and 2010.

Some more talk on the News tonight about the Liberals trying to get Alexander Downer into parliament at next election to take Redmond's spot.

Following on from what happened in Queensland with Newman I guess.

Not going to happen - he's busy and enjoying what he is doing now.(I spoke to him at Adelaide Uni on October 2nd.)
PS: The ALP call it "Labor" - they leave the "U" out of it - in so many ways... ;)

Downer would get flogged, "the idiot son of the Adelaide aristocracy".

LIBERAL MPs will grill Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond about whether she offered her job to former Howard minister Alexander Downer.

The Party is once again in turmoil - despite gaining ground with a recent poll showing they would comfortably win the next election.

The renewed instability follows claims Ms Redmond had private talks with former foreign minister Mr Downer in which she offered to walk away from the leadership to make way for him. Sources yesterday said her leadership was once again a "hot topic" and she would be questioned closely about what had taken place.

Liberal sources last night said Ms Redmond's supporters disclosed Mr Downer's potential candidacy before his wife, Nicky Downer, agreed to his return.
