Lindsay Tanner comes out firing about the current state of the ALP:

BOB Carr has called for Labor Party figures to stop bagging the government after former minister Lindsay Tanner took a swipe at the party, saying it has lost its purpose and removing Kevin Rudd was a mistake.

Mr Tanner told The Australian today: "I agree with John Howard’s assessment. Had Labor kept its nerve we would have won the 2010 election."

"I think panic was a significant factor in the removal of Kevin Rudd as prime minister but there were multiple factors involved."

An interesting story about Alexander Downer recently appeared in the Hills Courier.

Council keen to correct claims in column

Mt George resident and former Federal MP Alexander Downer has got his facts wrong, according to the Adelaide Hills Council.

Australia’s one-time Foreign Minister took a swipe at the council in one of his regular columns in The Advertiser, claiming that it took about a year to approve his home renovations.

But in a report tabled at last week’s council meeting, the planning department put the record straight, saying it only took “just under” four months to process the application and that included a one-month delay when a staff member sent a bill to the wrong address.

In his August 27 column in The Advertiser Mr Downer stated that: “The Adelaide Hills Council – a truly slow bureaucracy – took about a year to approve some changes we made to our house. That’s just a private residence. What message does that send to anyone who wants to bring development to the Hills?”.

Mr Downer was making a point about “getting rid of red-tape approval processes” as a way of getting SA back on its economic feet after BHP Billiton canned its anticipated expansion of Olympic Dam.

In my experience with the Greenies of the AHC I've found their definition of how long something took to resolve depends on when they decide the consideration of the application "started".
They tend to not count the early delays and shuffling before they decide to "consider" it, while they are trying to talk (or scare you) out of proceeding with the application.

I had a large, highly inflammable, tree 7.3 metres from a 3.6 metre picture window.
Having lived in the Dandenong Ranges during the big fires of early 2009, I wanted to remove it, because of the radiant heat risk in case of fire.
I'd checked the cost of external shutters as an alternative - far too expensive.

They tried to get me to not formally lodge the application because of the costs, as they said they would demand arborist reports, even in those circumstances.
My offer to plant 5 other trees further from the house if I could remove that one attracted no interest.

I did withdraw it when I got wind of the proposed legislation changes that came through last November during those discussions.
The tree is now gone under that legislation - and I do intend to plant some more trees where the Koalas in my back yard will appreciate them.

They can claim rapid processing as they had not actually started "considering" my application before I withdrew it after a few months.

What was the famous line in George Orwell's book "Animal Farm"? - "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others".???

"WITH five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a butler's pantry and a ''luxurious'' in-ground pool, it is anything but a house for a battler.

But the $1,125,000 pad in Oyster Bay, Sydney, was bought with union money to house Allen Hicks, the assistant national secretary at the Electrical Trades Union, one of Australia's biggest blue collar unions.

The use of the union money to buy the house - which includes a French provincial kitchen and a spa bath - is the latest controversy to embroil the union movement after the Health Services Union scandals.

Title searches by the Herald confirm that the Electrical Trades Union's NSW branch bought the house for $1,125,000. That was despite Mr Hicks, a former official from Queensland, not even working for that branch of the union.

Mr Hicks took up a role with the national union a year ago and moved from Queensland.

The ETU has been gripped by bitter factional infighting between its Victorian branch, led by the outspoken Dean Mighell on one side, and other parts of the union including the national office and its NSW branch.

But senior union figures, unconnected to the infighting, told the Herald yesterday that the purchase of a $1,125,000 house to lease to an official was an unheard of use of union money. The price is about 75 per cent above the median price of a Sydney house.

According to a real estate blurb, the Oyster Bay house was a ''statement in style and sophistication … [that] creates a lasting impression with its grand proportions, charming features and contemporary designs''.

It was ''uniquely set over four split levels and only four years in age'' and had a ''luxurious in-ground swimming pool with timber decking'' with a boat ramp within 500 metres.

The ETU's NSW secretary, Steve Butler, said in a statement that his branch was ''no different to any other union in Australia'' in that it made a number of investments to benefit members.

Mr Butler said the decision to buy the Oyster Bay property was made by ''ordinary rank and file ETU members from across NSW'' who sit on its governing bodies.

But Mr Mighell alleged that there was an attempt to disguise the purchase of the ''mansion'' by using the NSW branch ''so they didn't have to go through the books of the union nationally, in order to get approval for it''. Mr Butler did not respond directly to questions about this.

Michael Williamson, the former head of the Health Services Union (HSU) East branch, has been arrested after attending a Sydney police station this morning.

Mr Williamson, 59, said nothing as he walked into Maroubra Police Station shortly before 8am (AEST).

Police say he has been arrested in connection with investigations conducted by the Fraud and Cyber Crime Squad under Strike Force Carnarvon.

Detectives anticipate charging Mr Williamson with a number of offences related to hindering investigations, including recruiting a person to engage in criminal activity and being an officer of an organisation publishing false statements.

He was later seen being taken from the police station in a detectives car.

In May, the ongoing scandal engulfing the HSU took a dramatic twist as the Fraud Squad moved to seize computers and documents from the union's Pitt Street headquarters.

A person with a "bag of documents" was intercepted in a car park by police during the raid.

Police say they will release more information about Mr Williamson's arrest later today.

Little has been heard from Mr Williamson since July when he resigned as national president of the HSU via text message.

An internal union investigation uncovered material suggesting Mr Williamson had received millions of dollars in union funds.

The Right would still be stewing over this:

THE push for gay marriage within Labor received a major boost over the weekend when the Finance Minister, Penny Wong, and her Left faction scored an upset victory over the Right faction at the South Australian ALP conference.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/labor-linked-to-anti-jones-campaigners/story-e6freuy9-1226492393887

THE Destroy The Joint Facebook page, used to attack broadcaster Alan Jones, was set up by left-wing union official Sally McManus, who counts Employment Minister Bill Shorten as a friend.

Established after embattled 2GB breakfast host Jones said that "women are destroying the joint", it is co-run by failed former Labor Party candidate Victoria Brookman.

With more than 16,000 "likes", the Facebook campaign has been instrumental in galvanising public support against Jones and the Macquarie Radio Network in the wake of the radio host's comments about the Prime Minister's father.

But despite the Labor links of Ms McManus, 40, secretary of the white-collar Australian Services Union's NSW branch, and aspiring MP Ms Brookman, who ran against Brendan Nelson in the federal seat of Bradfield in 2007, those behind the campaign have denied any official connection to the ALP or politics.

TREASURER Wayne Swan was still present when a joke was made about Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's female Chief of Staff Peta Credlin and made a speech after the comedian's performance.
A distasteful and offensive joke about Ms Credlin was made at a Labor union dinner last night attended by Julia Gillard and senior Cabinet Ministers.
"The comedian’s comments were clearly very inappropriate and offensive. There’s no place for those kinds of comments and I made that clear to the union this morning," Mr Swan said.

The PM this morning called the union and expressed her anger at the joke.

Very disappointing to hear of this. However, good to see Wayne Swan and Julia Gillard both phoning to register a complaint.

This potentially could cause trouble for the Victorian Liberal Government as they may lose their single-seat majority if he is forced to resigin.

So Michael O'Connor is now backing Labor? It's just that in the 2004 election he told his members in Tasmania to vote Liberal as they wouldn't stop logging in Tasmania. They did. The Liberals got control of senate due to the extra Tasmanian senate seats and thus got work choices through unimpeded. Not a man who thinks through a situation O'Connor.
