why don't you de rust it?

wire brush, steel wool, sand paper etc etc

you can also finish it off with a salt scrub

once you have got rid of all the rust, coat it in oil and season it (get it hot and smoking)

depends how rusty it is. if it's only surface rust you will be fine but if it is more then surface rust you will be better off getting new plates. The problem you will have if it's more then surface rust is it'll look like you have cleaned it all, but it'll still be there deep in the metal. Best thing to do is never clean it throughly after use always leave a oil film on it to protect it, then give a good clean before you use it.

I normally do the bulk of it cold (helps if you can strip all the fat 1st) and do the salt scrub (with a little oil) hot, then clean it of before seasoning with fresh oil

Hot soapy water and scourer, back on the gas and super hot, loads of oil, scrape clean.

Let it cool, heat up again and oil it up. Jobs a good'un.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

we use these on our BBQ, it's great because the food doesn't stick to the hot plate and marinade doesn't just burn away
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

First burn it to death on the BBQ with gas full on for 5 min.

Then brush it with a wire brush. You can get a wire brush from Bunnings that fits your drill.

Wear Safety Glasses. You can get these from the same.

Wipe it over with napkins with a smidgen of olive oil.

Brand new. :D ;)

For BEST RESULTS, Drink plenty of alcohol when doing this.

Not neccessary but tell the Mrs that... ;)
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

During my North American travels this year, it seems weird that a continent that loves its BBQ culture so much literally has never heard of a hot plate at all. I've been looking for a BBQ like mine at home (which my Canuck exchange partner is loving as something completely new) with a hot plate one side, grill plates on the other. It's grill all the way here...if you wan't to cook anything more exotic than a wiener or frozen hamburger (and mostly, they don't) then they use a foil pan.

Anyway...back to the action.

There is something I had forgotten about Canada. Same thing when visiting the relatives over the east of the country/ They only have grill plates, and a barbecue consists of hot dogs & hamburgers. I should have warned you!

Hopefully it won't be too cold for a barbie when you're over here later in the year Les :)

Mrs Les still has handcam footage of me barbecuing out on the deck at her Mums house at Christmas a few years ago...standing in about 8 inches of snow, all rugged up in snow jacket etc! I had to clear all of the snow from the barbecue before I used it.
