Great game of footy between the Raggies and Port Districts yesterday.
3 time in 4 weeks the teams have played with raggies winning the last minor round game by 52 points but Districts winning both finals by 6 points a fortnight ago and 5 points yesterday.
never more than a goal or two in it with the lead changing a few times during the game.
The game was played in great spirits and was a hard hitting affair with players crashing in to be first to the ball and get it out to their runners.
1 point the difference at quarter time and Athelstone's inaccurate kicking (1.4) in the 2nd quarter (with the wind) saw Districts with a 4 point lead at half time.
The third quarter was a dour struggle with Districts kicking 3 points and the raggies just one goal to see Districts lead by a point at 3 quarter time.
The last quarter Districts kicked 2 straight against the wind and Raggies kicked 1.3, the last of which would have caused a draw was only about 30 seconds before the final siren.
When you play someone so frequently with such tight results you very quickly develop some respect for your opposition, which was displayed by both teams at the end of the game with some lengthy congratulations/commiseration handshakes.
Next week is the GF. The Jets only dropped two games all year and Districts 4. On paper the Jets would be favourites but we all know you don't win on paper you win on the oval on the day - so good luck to both teams.
I have played against Athelstone more than any other club, and the contests are always hard fought. This was no exception, close all day. From the times we've played the last few weeks, the big fella #24 has been very good. Surely has played a bit of A grade in the past. The tall dark fella has been great every time aswell, and is better than this standard. As said, both midfields had a great contest, with Rod Smitheram setting the example as usual for Districts.
Was good for Districts to get the win, with Leal not scoring a goal, showing they can get a win even if he doesn't have an outstanding game.
Smitheram in the last quarter (I think) did probably the best smother I have seen too btw, diving a few metres to his right.
Districts CHB wasn't too bad either, with some good runs off half back despite his minimal pace.
Districts have a lot of ground to make up to match it with Unley, should be a good day down at St. Mary's.
