However, I recognised that malicious unsporting attitude was part of the football culture from watching SANFL in the Fos Williams and Neil Kerley era..

That's why I prefer the more well policed AFL game now, and why in my youth, while I enjoy watching football for the skills, I took up Hockey because i didnt have the balls for footy
I had life aims that didn't allow room for getting maimed playing a game.
(Just like Peter Oatey, Rick Abbott, and Andrew Aish did. I don't claim I had their talent.)

Poor silly child.
What person with a brain would write off a well paying lifetime career for a game that included deliberate snipers trying to maim you.
Peter Oatey (Neurosurgeon), Rick Abbott (Pathologist), and Andrew Aish (Physiotherapist) had to make the same choice.

Plenty of "professionals" have played the game and "survived".

Yeah, I knew and worked with two personally, Keith Le Page and Tony Clarkson.
It is simply a matter of how much risk you are prepared to take, and at 13 I was already thinking of becoming a surgeon who would need working hands.

I had seen the genuine accidents in which Wally Miller got his sudden attack of "Polio" on the field under Don Lindner's flying knees and Jon Moody lost a kidney in his one game for Norwood.
But I had also watched , live, Neil Kerley (and Fos Williams mob) at work, and that probably influenced me when, at 13, I opted for Hockey.
You can get nasty injuries in that sport, too, but it is genuinely accidental as "taking out" players is not as much part of the culture.

I didn't mind the accident risk, but I wanted to be able to concentrate on the game I was playing not the snipers.
I was also happy to take the risks in Judo, Wrestling, and later horse riding.

Steven Morris .. Dunno what it is but there's something about him I can't stand, felt the same when he was at Westies too.

Definitely rate him as a player though, had him in my SC team all year and have no doubts he's a quality player.
