email from the club:

There's been a lot of speculation – far more than I'm comfortable with, actually - but I'm really pleased to let you know that I've committed to staying with the Port Adelaide Football Club.

I'm so relieved to have got the deal done after what has at times been a challenging year for me personally and for the club.

The big decision I had to make was whether to return home to be closer to my family or stay at the club I love. I've been in regular contact with my mum and sisters about my future and they've been unbelievably supportive with the decision that I've made.

I'm really happy with the decision because I'm so excited about the future of our club and I want to be a part of it.

The last two years doesn't reflect the talent of our group and I think we're going to realise our potential in the near future. I'm excited about what lies ahead and that was another major factor in my decision to stay.

I've had a huge amount of support from a lot of different people this year.

Our supporters have just been fantastic. I've been getting a lot of well wishes through Twitter, Facebook and even letters being sent into the club which has been quite overwhelming.

And the support I've had from the coaches, my team mates and staff has been terrific.

At no stage did they put pressure on, but allowed me time and space which really helped in my decision process.

There's an exciting time ahead for Port Adelaide, its supporters and members next year and after that at Adelaide Oval.

That's something I'm looking forward to being a part of and I'm sure you will want to be a part of, too.

Thanks for your support. I really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Boaky

I still can't work out why he's staying...

He might enjoy the Adelaide lifestyle, which is a bit more chilled than Melbourne.
He may enjoy the company of his teammates.
He may like the idea of being the best player in the team.
He may enjoy the idea of future Captain, which would be unlikely at his Victorian suitors.

But bet your bottom dollar that the dollars on the contract had a great deal to do with it.

Paul Roos wouldn't dare.... My thoughts of port would change a bit (just a smidge  ) with him on board, cause i rate him so highly... But no chance of him coaching there or next season imo..

Same reason Paul Kelly, Dale Lewis, Dennis Carroll and David Murphy stayed at the Swans during their very down times 20 years ago.

Love of the club, and their mates and lifestlye.

Unfortunately for Port, we're not in a northern developing market, so don't get the same assistance from the AFL via draft picks/concessions/father-son eligibility/salary cap relief, that some other clubs get in the same situation.
