Rnd 23 - South v North Post Match Discussions

Postby Wedgie » Sun Sep 02, 2012 6:01 pm

South 17.10 112
North 15.3 93

A 19 point victory for the Panthers who had a commanding 6 goal lead at 1/4 time.
Wundke kicked 6 in the first half but didn't add to his tally. He was beating North for most of the first half!
South way to good, score flattered North in the end with their accurate kicking.

Well done South, broke the hoodoo which has plagued us for the last few close games.

Following on the from live scores thread, has kicking 5 of the last 6 goals potentially saved North's final spot? Where would have an eight goal loss left them?

By my quick calculations if North lose to Centrals by 5 goals and Glenelg beat South by 5 goals and the Eagles beat West by about the same margin North would miss out. Quite a possible scenario.

I'm sure whatever the scenario, even if it involves me running the 100 metre quicker than Usain Bolt for North to miss out on the finals that we'll find a way to make it happen.

North's 1st quarter was embarrassing (as was the turn-out of South supporters today). Ridiculous effort considering a finals spot was on the line. If we get bumped out of the 5 we'll deserve it.

South far too good overall - especially in the first half. You would think North with alot more to play for than south would have put up some sort of competitive effort and ensured the one percenters were done like manning up, chasing and making tackles but for most of the first half that was non existent by us where as South did all of that and the skill level between the two teams at least in the first half was showing on the scoreboard.

Poor turnout of South supporters - seriously they have problems with their supporter base if today was any indication however as discussed on another thread, there were some contributing factors. I was almost embarrassed for their players post game who had no South kids to hand out footballs to on the grandstand wing - 3 players handed over the footballs to 3 North kids!

However as I said on the thread re the earlier game we played at Noarlunga this season, SAFC have done a great job with the facilities and the continued improvments at Polar Park considering what it was like when it first opened. Their catering etc is first class - they have easily the best BBQ in the SANFL.

P.S. On that effort today by North (and taking nothing away from the way South played) we don't deserve finals and could by default make it with a 9-11 record. Underserving Chooks!

I can see Centrals winning by 8-10 goals

Yes a good win today, but in someways it asks more questions than it answered. Souths first half was a s good as Ive seen all year.....so you have to ask where has that been hiding particularly when we have lost so many games by such small margins.
There haven't been too many games where we not have been right in the hunt at 3/4 time , someone told me we have lost 6 matches by less than a kick. In the past few weeks we've played Norwood, Centrals and West and run them v close, today we've defeated North and next week we will be Glenelgs' yet nemesis again, and end their finals aspirations. Seems like a horrible waste of a year to be quite honest. :?
I thought all played well without too many standouts but I thought Ky Millers game across halfback was very good, Liddle was about the place as usual, and Wundke's first half was very good. A good team effort.
As for the attendance , South always struggle to draw a crowd at the best of times... I think that supporters from any club would lose interest in a side if it hadn't won a flag for almost 50 yrs and spasmodically made the finals since. Not sure the fixturing of Fathers Day, along with 2 SFL finals only a mile or so away at the same time helped a great deal.

Yep Ky Miller was very impressive - surprised to read in the budget he is 22 but on that form today could be someone looked at by the AFL down the track.

Like B&W I found today frustrating in the sense that we caught a glimpse of what South is capable of..

Nice to win at home for a change, and to have a game comfortably wrapped up half way through the final quarter. Bit disappointing to let North kick some late goals, as a 5-6 goal margin would have been more reflective of the day.

Wundke was the difference early on. Was on track for double figures, but North did a good job dropping a man infront of him during the 2nd half. Ainger had his strongest game for some time, Cross the pick of the mids, while Crabb, Miller and Tarak were consistent down back. Liked the return of young McKay. Tough as nails and showed some real poise in tight with his hands.

North didn't appear to be particularly switched on during the first term, with South generally first to the ball and a lack of any real defensive pressure coming from the visitors. Mayes isn't a player I've seen much of, but he booted 4 and Bennett was good again.

Crowd poor, just the same old familiar faces.

Lastly, we had 4 ex-Roosters in the line up today. Anybody know the last time a team had 4 blokes playing against their old side? Bit of an oddity.

Now to end the Tiger's season again. 8)

Only 2 of them are of League standard and that is probably a big hint as to why South is not playing finals.

Agree that the 2 most recent additions are "battlers" at best.

Tarquin Brown comfortably beat Alleyway and Pfeiffer had a reasonable game against Norths midfield.

On the rails i don't think 2 ex-rooster players stopped South playnig finals (Tarquin Brown is a hard nut and Pfeiffer nice skills), losing 4 games by 6 points or less did the trick. Saw enough to suggest we have talent in both league and ressies and with some selective recruiting, better luck with injuries (Thewlis, McNamara, Richman) SAFC has plenty of up side for next year, player retention and stability is a must.
Thought the crowd was poor for both clubs but Fathers Day programming didn't help nor competeing against SFL finals, many Southies had their hearts broken by a string of close losses and given our finals hopes were over packed up their colours for next year.
Iám biased, but thought the ground facilities and oval look excellent, the tress around the ground starting to take hold and provide an attractive back-drop, now if we could just replace the stratco carport with a members grand stand on the western wing and some elevated terracing on the eastern outer.

Pfieffer is an outside receiver who doesn't like a hard ball get. He has no side to his game but does possess good skills and is a good kick on his right leg. As for your comment about Brown beating Alleway - I am not even going to dignify that comment.

I only realisd Alleway was playing in the last quarter when the game was done....

Pfieffer was useful but the other ex Rooster who couldnt get a look in at Prospect Wundke, kicked 6; won the Ken farmer medal last yr and will probably run a close second this year after missing the first 5 games.

Wundke was a required player at North and they did eveything to keep him and Stibling however the NAFC was not going to pay Wundke, who was out of shape and slack in his last year at Prospect, what the SAFC offered him which was more than what our Captain was on at the time. He even showed his contract offer from South to see if he could squeeze the same out of North.

Based on that you must be paying the bulk of your list peanuts at Noarlunga or have you gone back to giving your recruits a second contract to show the SANFL Salary Cap investigators?

I'll definately be choosing a different area to sit when we play north in future games. The garbage coming from a large group of people whinging about umpiring non stop for two hours on the hill was painful. If your team had of been first to the footy for the first three quarters you might have got a free. The game was done and dusted from the first bounce. If I had of had $1000 bucks in my pocket I woulda threw it on with confidence after the north player kicked a ripping goal on his left foot in the pocket at the northern end and then ran back to the centre barely getting a pat on the back. They didn't even look interested
