Is Cornes value for the team

Postby prowling panther » Sun Sep 02, 2012 5:32 pm

Firstly, I dont follow Power except for when South players are in the team.

Now that I have that out of the way

My question is to Power supporters, is Cornes any real value to the Power?

I watch as many AFL games which Power and Crows play as I can, and I am buggered if I can see any value in Power keeping Cornes next season, to many of his kicks are hospital balls inviting his team mates to get cleaned up and the majority of his kicks finish up in opposition hands which result in scores against the Power.

Danyl Pearce is another, misses easy shots in front of goal and turns the ball over too many times to be of real value to them.

Am I baised against him or do I see things different from what really happens.
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

I reckon he still is, although only because they are light on for blokes that can regularly find the ball and use (obviously he's not faultless in that department, but he's better than several teammates).

To become a legitimate contender they need better than him, but the same can be said for many.

Off topic I know, but it's the 2nd time this season I've seen Young play for them and he looks an excellent prospect

Not really overly valuable; Peter Rohde arranged a multiple year contract extension a few years ago for him, which is one of his more ordinary decisions for the club.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have just made that decision off his own back

Perhaps not, but he would have been significantly involved in the process.

Whoever it was that was ultimately responsible, it was poor list management.

Not disagreeing with that, but whilst a footy ops manager (or whatever their official title is) would have a say in a player and the list, I'd think the coaches mostly make the assessment of who's good enough and who isn't .. It's then that Managers job to sign or release accordingly.

The main issue was perhaps that it was a more than 1 year contract.

Again though I would be surprised if that was Rohde's doing against instruction.

Regardless, I think he like nearly everyone at the Power has to be in the firing line .. Their problems in recent times have run deeper thatn just one or two blokes.

I've never been a Cornes fan but to his credit he is still improving every year but still probably time to call it quits.
With Pearce, he must be the most maligned player at Port. Yes, he is an outside player and struggles with a hard tag, but when Port are playing good football he is always one of our best. I get sick of hearing people bag him when they ignore players like Logan, Surjan, Chaplin et all that are just as liable for Port being an ordinary side at the moment...
If you don’t like my words, don’t listen. If you don’t like my appearance, don’t look. If you don’t like my actions, turn your head; It’s as simple as that.

McCarthy? Goer sure, but skills would barely be SANFL standard.

SANFL players would take offense at that, he has far worse skills.

McCarthy's kicking has been incredibly disappointing this year.

We were told in the offseason that Collingwood rated him but I'm guessing you don't let go of players you rate unless you are getting a star in return.
Think Cornes is now a tagger/back pocket only and while people are down on Pearce, I'm pretty certain that if he ends up at Hawthorn, Carlton or Richmond next year he's going to return to being a star.
