SANFL to be reduced to 8 sides by 2014?

All discussions to do with the SANFL

After hearing Sturt and Eagles CEO's speak last night on 5AA last night they discussed the potential fall out if the league clubs reduced to 8.

A channel 10 journalist has got wind of this confidential meeting and discovered that the Magpies were late/absent from discussions due to an alleged diary mix up.

He went to Footy Park instead of a city venue where the meeting was scheduled.

Those days are looooooong gone regards beating port imo, they haven't been near to being a force for a long time, beating them is nothing like it used to be.
As for crowds, I was at alberton a few weeks ago and the attendance was sad. Last sun at prospect (stand alone game) less than 3k.
Port's crowd no's (whilst the best in the sanfl for a long time) are now over rated and almost a myth.
Having 400-500 more to a game is small fry and almost irrelevant. Projected crowd figures for norwood v port last time at the parade were well below expectations.
I am not doubting for one minute port have the biggest following in the sanfl and I am not trying to whack port either - but I won't subscribe to "no port - no sanfl".

Disagree. Port supporters are bandwaggonners just like other clubs supporters. They are in the middle of their worst period in the club's history. I believe they haven't gone so long since playing in the finals, I know for fact this is their longest premiership drought and this year and last they've been serious candidates for the spoon.
If you expect them or any other club to still bring in above average crowds under such conditions you're dreaming. If they did manage it, they'd be a more noble breed than supporters of the other 8 clubs.
But they haven't, and they are not.
Prediction: if Port make the Grand Final, it'll be sold out. If they were top of the table they'd have the biggest crowds.
Bookmark that if you care, if they get their act together we will be flooded with them.

The key is the crows when they do good people go see the big league team play not their local side. When the crows are shite they go see their local team play. You look at SANFL attendances when the crows are up near the top of the ladder compaired to when the crows are mid table to bottom of the ladder. SANFL attendance improves when the crows are playing shite.

Perhaps I should just say Port's potential is great.

I dont see a workable solution to the reserves issue and I dont know that either AFL club or the SANFL do either, without completely compromising the SANFL.

If the afl clubs sole desire is to develope it's players by playing in one team under a unified game plan.
Why did they turn down playing in sanfl reserves ???
It's the perfect solution afl clubs get what they want without compromising sanfl comp.

Maybe it isn't really what they desire ???

I agree, this for mine is the best option as far as the SANFL's integrity goes, but obviously not ideal for the two AFL clubs to have their players playing reserves grade football every week.

Did we just agree on something?

:D

I thought we've always agreed booney :-)

Sanfl reserves wouldnt be that far off having reserves teams in northern and eastern football leagues like swans GC gws etc have reserves. Afl players play in sanfl reserves when their sanfl team have the bye now. So the standard can't be seen as detrimental to players developement as afl players have been playing sanfl reserves for 20 years. Freo said they were prepared to have an ammo team.

Maybe developing their players in the same team isn't all they want. Plus aren't we selling the licences ??? Why would we care if we are ???

I agree it really is the only way i can see pafc turning it around and getting fans back regularly is by winning a flag.

Chances of that happening before the next tv deal ??? Small/very very unlikely

Even maggies winning a sanfl flag would Atleast get the club buzzing despite pafc fans saying the league should be shut down. But I doubt it would help increase power fan numbers greatly/regularly.
