(Reuters) - Former U.S. astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.

Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on August 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the dusty surface, Armstrong said: "“That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Speak to Southee. He'll 'set you straight'...

Of course they went. If for no other reason than a secret like that could not be kept by so many for so long.

Neil Armstrong should probably go down as the greatest explorer of all time. I always admired his desire to maintain a low profile. Never saw him promoting the 'Abercisor 2000'!

The Obama drop kick said Armstrong was among the greatest heros of the 20th century. Who were the others?

The loony fringe are already looking for the "evidence" of the current Mars landing being fake too.
But they are balanced by those finding fossilised fingers, old shoes, and UFOs in the pictures coming back.

No, I was busy at the hospital I was working at, working hard so the medical staff had something to watch it on.

I had to up the gain on a rather worn out cathode tube to get a picture on the old TV I'd "rescued" from a store room.
Then, I needed to rig a better indoor antenna using a couple of wire paper trays and some tape to get better reception.
The other docs covered for me while I did this essential work - as I was the one in the team who knew how to do it.
(All that building amplifiers and speaker boxes in the Medical School work shop between lectures paid off.)

We kept that TV set in the doctors common room for the rest of the year and eventually shamed the Chief Clerk into buying a new one.
The fact that the Medical Superintendent had started lunching with us junior staff helped.
