Re Port's current situation, and the financial support that is given to the various clubs, I saw an article quoting ex AFL boss, Wayne Jackson, who has some interesting things to say.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/a ... 6447870779At the start of 2012 Port had a better winning percentage than arch-rival Adelaide.
The supposed basket case's win/loss ratio of 51.9 per cent compared with the Bulldogs' 45.5, the Dockers' 40.3, and the Saints' 39.5.
Port won the premiership in 2004, exactly 50 years after the Bulldogs' only premiership and 40 years since Melbourne's most recent triumph. St Kilda's only premiership was in 1966.
And of course the Bulldogs, Melbourne and St Kilda flags in question were won in the VFL.
Before entering the AFL, Port won SANFL premierships in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 . . . well, you get the picture.
Port made the finals in its third year in the AFL, starting a run of seven finals appearances in nine years, ending with the 2007 grand final.
Former AFL boss Wayne Jackson has defended Port Adelaide, saying the attacks on the Power reeks of a Victorian-centric culture.
"The Victorian press is so fond of talking about interstate clubs," Jackson told The Weekend Australian. But in a national competition there's no such thing as an interstate club. They're all interstate clubs."
Jackson said charges Port was a drain on the competition were easily countered by flipping through the other clubs' books.
"The financial support given to Port would be significantly less than that given to Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and the two (new) franchise clubs."
Jackson said that for the foreseeable future the AFL was committed to the league's present structure.
