What next? Upper Mongolian round?

Michael Graham would be thrilled to hear this I'm sure.

The idea of the round is fine, the execution smacks of tokenism of the highest order.

Michael Graham is no more special than any other player who has donned the Cambridge and Oxford blue.

The whole round is about highlighting one ethnic group as special... where are the rounds celebrating other ethnic groups or is no one else worthy?

In addition, I don't recall all the other rounds "not" being for indigenous people(s) to enjoy... so with them not being excluded in every other round, why are we trying to include them in one special round.

Its tokenism, someone felt guilty and this made them feel better.

An aboriginal player is no more or less important to me than any other player, I like Cubillo because he tries hard, not because he's black, I liked Paynter because he was good, not because he was white...

Paynter WAS white? WTF has happened??

The trouble with all these special rounds is that every day we get told, teach our kids etc that everyone is the same, not matter who or where they may be from and shouldnt be treated any different to 'us'...

then we get these special rounds promoting that they are different and special etc....

either they (indigenous, multicultred etc) are different or their not!

Last time I checked nicking someone's country qualifies as something to feel guilty about.

And you're complaining about a bit of, albeit lame, marketing?

That is a rather thin argument..
Nicking land has been normal practice for milennia, just like territory is for other species.
It has gone on for 100s of thousands of years among humans, not just a few hundred years.
No one is "ab origine" in the strict Latin sense of "from the beginning" - there was always someone there before.

England, for example, had local tribes before the Celts occupied it in pre-history and became the "Britanni" to the Romans who took it next.
The came Viking raiders from the Baltic shores, who eventually established the "Danelaw" over much of it.
Then there were Angle, Saxon, and Jutlander mercenaries who came to fight the cousins the "Danes" and decided to stay and rule.
And, in 1066, another Viking group came via their settlement in Normandy and took over completely.

I'd still like that German usurper Charles to hand over the Duchy of Cornwall to me since at least several generations of my paternal line were born in Cornwall.
I agree my case is slender - but it is a better claim than his historically if we are going to claim the past gives us moral right so many years later! ;)

I can see this thread mirroring the AFL indigenous round thread.

Here is my take:

Umpire Appreciation Round, Womens Round, Indigenous Round, Heritage Round, Multicultural Round.

They all have a place to recognize the amazing and progressive achievements seen in football.

The only group that is not covered at all is White Australians.

But if anyone dared suggest such a round, they would be cast down as a racist and cynic.

So we can't have a round to celebrate the achievements of Barry Robran, The Brothers Gowans, and every other sensational white person to play the game.

I tend to agree with you MP, except I think it is better to not stir up racial issues from either end.
We all need to work together in the current reality for all to benefit, not to to just play the victim card, or tit for tat, over the past.

In Australia we need to do more to help improve our native people's health and education.
They need to cooperate in controlling the behaviour of delinquent groups and not oppose any attempted intervention as another "invasion"

Serbians and Croatians both claim to have been the innocent victims of the other group's unprovoked aggression over a thousand years ago.
It does nothing the allow reconciliation, and only hampers it.

Not according to the High Court of Australia.

I do hope the irony of having Norwood play in the Indigenous Round isn't lost on anyone.

:D

Is it really that difficult to suffer, a round of a football competition being called Indigenous Round? Your team isn't even playing. Do you seriously think these sorts of initiatives are intended for the sole purpose of making White Australians feel guilty?

The WAFL have been doing it for a while and have never heard any bleating about it.

Some of the NAIDOC guernseys are better than the regular home and away strips.
It's all the SANFL's fault.
