Back in the day players would put up with these ground conditions every 3 weeks or so.
Now players are lucky to see this kind of thing once or twice all year (unless it's your home ground) & I think this condition is less dangerous then covered concrete pitches & the fencing around many ovals.
The odd good old fashioned slog is one of the things that makes our game so different & great.

With what is available nowadays in drainage materials there is no excuse for having an oval in that condition. I reckon even pigs would think twice about going on it!

Fairly reasonable point, if I was the club I'd be doing something about it as those conditions would certainly take toll on all players over the season. I don't know this clubs situation & why they haven't done anything about it or even if the location of the oval allows for much to be done.
IMO when Gaza (which was as bad as this) had the first lot of new drainage put in, I thought it was more dangerous as every 15m you had a trench (nice for rolling ankles) & grit everywhere that shredded you up.
I still believe that there is more dangerous things that you can encounter on the footy field than this condition, which we should hear more about.

When your legs get stuck in the mud and your either slid into or cop a bump, only things that can give are the ankles or knees.

For whoever signed the JLT Insurance Form passing that oval fit to play, they are very VERY lucky no one did a serious injury. The implications of signing that form are clear for all to read.

is it just me or are we all getting a bit hysterical here ?

yes the bridgy oval was bad, but ive seen a few games there over the past five years and it has been ok on each occasion. clearly it hasnt coped with the amount of rain of the past month. just move the last few games and get on with it.

mop up - i was at a rock-hard country oval earlier in the year where i saw 3 knees go on the same day. no one would have questioned whether that oval was fit to play, but it was more dangerous that the ovals the hfl used on the weekend.

next topic please.

Gervais & others that seem to be dismissing this: has YOUR club played at Bridgey as it is in those photos? Has YOUR club had to bathe in a nearby creek as running water was barely running in the changerooms? "Just move the last few games & get on with it". Brilliant. You claim it all as water off a duck's back & then say 'move games' as if it's no thing. I have played in total bog holes & agree with you that it's a part of the sport, but this is a stretch. I think it's actually more about not being able to clean the rancid sh$t off you after a game than the oval itself.

So we just excuse the oval because it is OK when there is no rain? It's the Hills league, it's always raining! We are not talking about a one-off, it's been a persistent problem for years.

In regards to the rock hard oval, that is something that should've been questioned as it is on these oval safety forms. As for the more dangerous opinion, well that is a bit hard to quantify, possibly was.

It's 2012 and they're still playing footy on that terrible oval. Would have spent heaps of $$$$ on players that got them no where but have never fixed up that oval. Poor form

Welcome back Vaughn - great to have you back from your business ventures.
Unfortunately, I have heard strong rumours (ie president of bridgy speaking to players) that the fortress wont be used again this season, all remaining home games to be moved to cornerstone. hope for the raiders sake they get a liqour licence!

no skin off my nose where bridgy play, although cant see cornerstone being a viable option as limited options for canteen, bbq, etc.

maybe they could hire heathfield.

Heathfield? I don't get it.
With only 2 home games left I guess they might have to forego the booze & wear it if they end up at Cornerstone.
Cornerstone was flagged as a home ground if Mt Barker were to enter a second team, any merit in that thought? What sort of playing numbers do the Roos have? The obvious population argument is that they should have a second team by now.

Wouldn't stirling be more of a liable option ?? Seems cornerstone is further away plus isn't it being redeveloped for sturt's big relocation ?

On a sadly thematic note - many thanks to the Ironbank Sports Club (particularly Football Club) who allowed Heathfield High School to play their Open Boys K.O. game there today after Mt Lofty pulled the pin on us at the eleventh hour. It seems some of the Mt Lofty committee were trying to avoid any repercussions (arse covering) after many players posted pics and and made comments about Bridgewater oval on the weekend.
Again, thanks to Ironbank.
BTW (for those that care) Heathfield got up and will now play in the Grand Final in 2 weeks at Woodville Oval. :D :D
We want Vaughn.
