And what a laugh it's going to be when Port Flowers play most of their games at the new 50k seater Adelaide Oval and it's not even half full! Will they get some pretty rolls of material from Spotlight and drap them over those brand new seats? It's going to happen as the novelty won't last long no matter how much media spin they throw at it because people will not justify the ridiculous cost to see these games! Over-hyped and definately over-priced for what it really is. You can't tell me Footy park is making that much difference to the Flower fans not going, I say it's $ and shite on field performance all day every day! Adelaide Oval will be more expensive like the cost of living, and that squad has more holes in it then swiss cheese  Can't wait

or in the Foxtel cup, oh yeh that's right, our premiers wont play in that!

What a surprise that the Foxtel Cup would be brought up. I'm suggesting something that would strengthen ties between the two comps, not something that sells out to the manipulation and desires of the AFL and pay tv

an off the cuff comment in Saturday's The Age said AFL Vic will have the VFL in a different format next year.

I know supporters of ex VFA clubs are not happy with how things have gone in Victoria....... the joint ventures dont work. AFL clubs align with clubs they have no link with (geography should have been a factor) then swap over after a few years.

Once again I advocate for the AFL to spend some money (dont waste it on a chinese academy) on an U23 league.... get the AFL guys and draft prospects out of state leagues. The U18 national championships isnt a great display of talent comapred to the TAC Cup.

LMFAO...you want AFL listed and "draft prospects" out of the state leagues, yet bleat on about protecting the SANFL. Who would be left, and who would decide the draft prospects from those who aren't?

Not by removing them out of their current teams and putting them in a new comp!

At the moment if an SANFL club has one or a few U18 draft prospects they will hardly be able to use them anyway due to the National Carnival and their associated commitments throughout the season, then they are drafted and that's that. No big loss in the end, unfortunate but that's the reality.

Shannon Hurn won a flag before drafted.

The system here is fine and the envy of other states Al Clarkson is a huge fan . If not drafted the Kid can play on at his home club in the Sanfl. Unlike the majority of Victorian kids who comes thru TAC cup.

Let's not throw out the baby with the bath water. It's a worse case scenario we lose our juniors for the "greater good" not a necessity.

It does piss me off that these young blokes are taken out of our clubs for so long during this year, especially for some of the commitments outside of the u/18's carnival, especially those blokes who are good enough to play league footy eg Toumpas, Aish. Even so, I still find the argument hard to believe that it does them better to play in the carnival than in a league side if they are good enough, and no league side is going to gift a regular game to a kid and they have helped developed these players but don't get the full benefit just for that one year.

The Eagles could really use Toumpas at the moment!! But we have biogger issues if we are relying on a 17 year old kid to pick us up off the mat.

Cutterman and UK Fan, think you make a good point that I was overlooking - if this is the one negative of our current system, then we shoudln't go upsetting the whole thing just to change this part.

Read the context whufc, who would choose the "draft propsects" to take out of the league? AFL recruiters dont take them until they are actually drafted. James is an advocate for thse bloke(s) being taken into another comp before they get drafted. Who chooses that list?

James wants AFL listed players and all potential draft prospects taken out of the state leagues, but wants to protect the state leagues?

He was doing ok until then.

use talent scouts, like they do now. But once they're gone, they're gone. Then We can play the guys in the reserves that deserve a league game & players like Musolino etc., won't bugger off to the ammos or the country prematurely.

I don't begrudge the AFL or the kids playing in the U18 comp or going to the AIS etc, this is all part of helping them with their future, what I do find hard to take is going on trips over to bloody France etc during the footy season. I think the benefits of these kids proving themselves in the SANFL against men, especially if they get the chance to play in finals, is huge and pretty well gets them ready for playing AFL in their first year. I reckon someone like Jack Trengove gained heaps of confidence knowing that he can stand up on the big stage in the '09 finals.
However, in the plain light of day, once most of these kids are big enough to play Senior SANFL footy their time is taken up with U18 commitments and then they're drafted. So in the end you don't get much service from them only a bit of money dribbling down from their AFL club.

Generally agree Cutterman. I admit it is petty and selfish of me to say about them playing in the carnival rather than league footy, it just frustrates me a bit that the preparation, commitments and carnival seem to go on for so long these days compared to the old Teal Cup.
But at the end of the day it's all about getting them into the AFL system, and each state has a different set-up, so overall the system probably works as well as it can taking every state into account (except for those France trips!!)

I wonder why to, but suppose they run the show. Would be interesting to know how many are drafted from the SA team over time, how many play league footy adn how many other drop off.

Do I like it, No.

Am I a young 16-18 year old with a dream to play my chosen sport at the highest level possible and earn on average $300 000 a year doing it?? No.

Centurion you grew up wishing you could play for your team and and would give your left nut to play one game for Centrals like your hero Lyle Skinner :D . Me, I would give my right nut to play one game for the Bays wearing #12 of my hero graham Cornes. We were born ina different era when teh SANFL was king. Differnt now the kids still have the same dream but it isn't at teh SANFL dream it is teh AFL dream.

Who are we to stand in the way of their dream?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
