Sturt - By the numbers

Postby Dogwatcher » Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:30 pm

In 1901 Sturt presented its first guernseys to its players.
Club and SANFL historians have traced back, as best they can, the numeral order for every player who has worn the guernsey since.
This weekend, the club will release a draft list of all of its players in numerical order of appearance.
The idea is similar to the Australian Test cricket team, where each player receives a number.

Interestingly, according to the press release, the club solved a mystery when it found one player had played under an assumed name as his parents weren't keen on him playing footy.

The draft list will be announced on Sunday - ring the club for more details.

Great idea and well done to all those involved.

Eagles run with something similar ... but is a lot easier if you only have to go back to 1991.

It is a great effort by the sturt historians to ressurect player lists from early last century.

It is impossible for some of the clubs which commenced prior to 1901. Often there was nothing recorded prior to the turn of the century as to who played in certain games

Very nice work by Sturt. Unfortunately it would be impossible for North to do. We simply don't have the complete records of 1893-1896 (or 1888-1896 if you want to include Medindie).

Perth in the WAFL have been doing this for a while, they present players with a cap that has their number in order of appearance on it. They've had over 1500 players over the course of the history of the club, being formed in 1899 you'd think Sturt have had a similar number of players which makes it an impressive effort to work it all out this far down the track.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Norwood have a keyring for every player that plays a League game with their number in history (up to 1400 odd). great idea by any club going to the effort to track players.

South Fremantle did the same. Mrs Lindner's grandfather played for them and we got his cap.

Is that right back to 1878? With all due respect as someone who has done a bit of research of the pre 1900s football I don't see how they could.

Loxton North footy club has done theirs. Obviously that would be a lot easier than most other clubs as they only started in the 50s. You get a club shirt with your player number on it after your A grade debut.
