Why did the VFA become the VFL? Why didn't they just stay as they had been since 1877?

I am told by a reliable source that the SANFL, through Don Roach, and the VFA were the only ones who dared stand up to the VFL and their attempt to take over the game in NFL meetings. Ultimately they lost, the VFA is long dead and the SANFL is a defacto reserves competition: but IMO they were right in hindsight.

SANFL a defacto reserves comp.; I'm not sure your going to get that one through to many on here infact it's in so many ways crap! What we need is to ignore the Roxtel Cup as it's AFL House Masturbation!

I was a bit harsh on the SANFL - especially as Central have won a lot of trophies with very few Port & Crows hand-me-downs. I just want the AFL clubs and their players out. The sight of Mark Williams giving Shattock individual coaching at one of the breaks is still fresh in my mind.

The Foxtel: does any club with a hope of a premiership actually take part (Central, Eagles & Norwood prefer the main prize). To quote Vince Lombardi 'Its a losers game for losers'

Seems it killed off Port Melbourne and Claremonts chances of winning their leagues last year

Port Melbourne didn't play in it did they?

Claremont played in both WAFL and Foxtel Grand finals

Two very historic clubs against each other... a shame they cant play it at Port Melourne or an Adelaide ground for atmosphere....

anyway hopefully someone will be there and neither side will play their reserves

I saw the game on tv that night - definitely wasn't Waverley - I think it was the South Melb oval - Lake Oval?
Where's the South historian when we need him?

Definitely played at the Lakeside Oval acccording to my records.

It definitely would not have been played at Waverley given that Waverley was the VFL headquarters and the VFL had boycotted the competition.

Not a bad crowd at Nwd Oval to watch Port Melb/QLd actually.

Righto Southies, How strong a team is Ronny selecting to take on the Boroughs?

Given the embarrassment Port Adelaide has brought on the SANFL surely the Panthers would be going all out to try and snatch some silverware

Claremont went for both lost the Foxtel cup but brought home the main prize in the WAFL and picked up the the Sandover as well. trying to do the double again and they have the furthest to travel of any club. Have twice played at Metricon stadium last year and this year. Hasn't hurt them a few clubs here could take a leaf out of their book in how to promote their club nationally.

So you want to take AFL listed players out of the SANFL?

> immeadiate drop in standard (IMO) > unlikely to attract the likes of Callinan etc who use the SANFL as a platform to approach the AFL system ( whether you like it or not, thats what happens ) > those players move to VFL/WAFL > might as well call the SANFL comp Div A1.

Well Booney, tell that to your mate Rucci, he thinks AFL is the only game in town ( loves those freebies too I bet ) and can't understand why some of us rate SANFL as a spectator sport each week! Boy oh boy the Crows and WC Eagles are really struggling this year due to their fringe players not being gamestyle ready to fill voids and compliment the way coaches are asking them to perform! AFL reserves in Adelaide and Perth is unneccessary especially when you look at say all the Flags won in the last two decades outside of Melbourne as well as how bad some Victorian clubs are still, despite having a reserves comp. to roleplay their own guys each game. My personnal opinion is that Rucci, McDermott etc. use this cop out issue to justify our AFL teams on field failures as well as cringing at Centrals prolonged success!
